Liberty ditches Big South for Atlantic Sun. USC Upstate/Liberty is our first conference trade since Denver/UMKC? Have we ever had a conference triangle?

Big South down to 11. Might be eyeing Howard to complete Hampton.

ASun up to 9. Adding the 2 Florida MEAC schools and dumping NJIT is a scenario.
Here's a story I could find regarding the Liberty news: http://www.aseaofred.com/liberty-to-mak ... ouncement/

The move would be to the Atlantic Sun for all sports excluding football. The Flames have been a member of the Big South since 1991, shortly after they became D-I in 1989.

The Howard move to the Big South makes sense as they would likely have more in common with the schools in that conference or the Atlantic Sun.

Well, if the MEAC gets further raided as you suggest with Howard and the Florida schools, they may beat The WAC to dissolution.

They're fortunate enough to be bloated with 13 teams right now, however:

-Savannah State is going D-II after next academic year (2019).
-Hampton going to Big South

That puts them at 11. If you take 3 more out, then they are at the autobid minimum. (Technically, they could go to 7 and still not lose the bid, BUT they'd have to get back to 8 within 3 years, IIRC).

For the MEAC, I guess the silver lining is the remaining schools would mostly be limited in their options, but that would not be a great position to be in-one league would probably poach, just to puncture the balloon.

I know the MEAC would prefer to stay an HBCU conference but are there really any options from other conferences they could go after? Tennessee State is the only one I can think of that's D-I in that part of the country. Do they start to raid D-II?

Hopefully they’d rescue Chicago St (HBCU in spirit) from its rolling WAC contract but they’d probably ask Virginia State (actual HBCU) first.

Except most the of realistic/available MEAC options have already tried, failed and retreated from DI:

Morris Brown began reclassification to DI, but then the school got caught in a Federal embezzlement scheme, lost its accreditation and had to withdraw.

Winston-Salem State voluntarily withdrew during its reclassification to DI in 2010.

Savannah State is going DII in 2019, a run of less than 10 years in DI.

Prospects frankly aren't good if you move in to a DI HBCU, unless its for football. There's really no point in making the move for basketball. You're not really going to lift your profile. You're likely only going to ever be a 16 seed.

Schools like Clark Atlanta, Shaw and Morehouse don't need the exposure.

Endgame is probably a MEAC/SWAC merger. I don't see many ways around it.
That's enough, Reggie Miller.

That's enough, Chris Webber.

Just to clarify--is Hampton playing Monmouth UNIVERSITY (in NJ), or are they actually playing our local DIII Monmouth COLLEGE--in Monmouth?

I could see Hampton coming to Macomb and playing WIU (they have before in men's hoops, including the season after their 2001 March Madness run while WIU was mired in the waning years of the Kerwin era), and they MIGHT have played in football non-con before--but coming to Warren County and playing MC? Has to be the New Jersey Monmouth University--but just wanted to make sure.

It's the one in New Jersey. Things may be bad for Hampton but they aren't THAT bad.

D-II Merrimack College has accepted an invitation to join the Northeast Conference for the 2019-2020 season: https://merrimackathletics.com/news/201 ... rence.aspx

Merrimack will become a full member of the conference in the 2023-2024 season following the 4-year mandatory NCAA reclassification period. Merrimack already competes in D-I men's and women's hockey in Hockey East and are set to remain there in those sports.

This is the first expansion for the Northeast Conference since 2012 when Bryant joined.

This will give the NEC 7 football schools.
