If Memphis wants to go to the Big XII, they may have a way of getting in...FedEx: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootbal ... the-big-12

TAS and Squirrel, I'd be interested to get your take on this story.
Short answer: NIU isn't getting in the Big 12 in the next 50 years.

Long answer: Northern Illinois University isn't getting in the Big 12 in the next fifty years.

Paul Newberry of the AP wants Baylor to pull the plug (or at least de-emphasize) its entire athletic program:

http://www.pjstar.com/sports/20160526/c ... ram?page=2

I don't know if we'll see anything extreme out of this (or even Baylor being kicked out of the Big XII) but who knows if one of the residual effects of the Baylor/Ken Starr scandals will be a re-start of the conference realignment dominoes?

If Penn St stayed in the Big 10, Baylor stays in the Big 12.

The one possible angle I can see is that if the Big 12 wanted to dissolve, they need 8 yes votes. Now Baylor can be one of the two universities "left behind" if 8 of the 10 teams want to bail.

Late last month, UC San Diego again put DI athletics to a student referendum and increased student activity fees to help fund them, and this time it passed. The school last considered a move to DI in 2010, but both students and the Big West Conference rebuffed the effort. Even though the students now support the move, the NCAA still requires a standing invitation from an active DI conference to be able to make the move.

The Big West also officially added men's volleyball on June 1, which is a sport UCSD already competes at the DI level.

Fantastic campus and fantastic academic school. The arena is borderline D1 but there are certainly worse out there.

My favorite conspiracy theory is that Texas is finally relenting on expansion because they know they're going to be out the door soon and want to make nice with the others to smooth the transition. :joker

Rumors abound about what the Big 12 is doing. I don't believe them. I mean, why decide this moment to expand, and not before, and not after. Something doesn't add up about this situation.

My do-not-care meter for the current wave of rumors is running pretty high.

Big 12 will interview "at least" 18 schools

Basically the entire AAC (except Louisville and Tulsa), and:

MWC
Boise State
BYU
UNLV
Colorado State
New Mexico
San Diego State
Air Force

Others
Northern Illinois
Arkansas State

That is a large list of the Big 12, AAC and many Southern located teams. They just need to merge full blast and be called the BIG Southern Athletic Conference.

I'm with you here...if they hadn't gone on record to say they are capping at 14, I wouldn't be ruling out a 16, 18, 20 or even 24 team league. Easiest way to kill competition is absorb them. After a few years, you can take the best of the best and split and dump the rest and join the other BCS leagues and split.

Or call it "Big America" or "Big Country."

BTW, the latter was the nickname for former Oklahoma State basketball star Bryant Reeves (1991-1995). Reeves later played for the Vancouver Grizzlies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryant_Reeves

I'm convinced the Big 12 doesn't have a plan or an endgame here. This whole thing is sloppy, and even began sloppily after years of refusal of expansion.

There's no way the Big 12 is worried about the MWC or AAC. The Big 12 is a dead conference walking. It may take until the 2030s, but it's dead conference walking.

The Big 12 seems set to pare down their list of 20 prospective institutions to 6-8 schools and bring them in for final interviews. The report indicates the league may just go with 2.

The rumored "finalists":

Cincinnati
Memphis
Houston
UCF
USF
BYU
UConn
1-2 additional AAC teams not names

Memphis and UCONN are interesting names from a basketball perspective too. It would make an already strong league stronger. Will BYU realize they aren't Notre Dame and give up their attempt at being independent?

This is extraordinarily insulting to Memphis. Rice, Tulane, and Air Force are still candidates and Memphis is not.

I guess I assumed Memphis withdrew, or knew they weren't a choice and just getting it out now. The question is whether or not it is voluntary. But other schools such as Rice, it behooves them to stay in longer publicly even if they're not the choice.

ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

http://www.si.com/college-football/2016 ... n-unlikely

Here's the cliff notes of the situation:
- The Big 12 has, in its contract with the TV networks, a clause that increases the amount of money the conference gets if they add schools (so that each new school gets their fair share).
- The networks obviously don't want the Big 12 to expand (unless the schools are worth it, which they aren't).
- The Big 12 announces they want to expand because they want that money
- The networks don't want the Big 12 to expand because it'll cost them money
- The two sides come to an agreement that gets the Big 12 more money, but not the money it would've gotten if they expanded
- As part of the agreement, no expansion
- The Big 12 basically just used all the other schools as pawns to get what they wanted from FOX/ESPN (more cash money)
