Springfield Lutheran and Routt co op

Post by Cappy » Tue Mar 06, 2018 9:07 pm

Interesting story today about possible football coop of these two schools 30 miles apart. That's the kind of thing I thought only happened in Nebraska.

Some years back Cullom (Tri-Point) and Donovan in east central Illinois co-oped in football. They are about 30 miles apart.

Mapquest says 32.5 miles between campuses. Ouch. However...... According to the springfield paper, routt has won only 8 games in six years. Heck yes that coach is happy if he only gets three or four players to help stop the bleeding. And who knows, there might be real interest on Lutherans part, what if they give ten players? Routt coach said they only get twenty kids a year coming out so even a few helps. Maybe just eliminate one practice a week or something. I have a school friend in flower mound, Texas. He wanted a Catholic education for his kids and the nearest Catholic school was 30-35 miles away. Every one of his kids went there, he said they loved it, didn't complain, did their homework in the car and it worked just fine. I'm sure there are parents and kids who feel the same way about athletic participation as my friend and his family did about their religious affiliation. I hope the co op works and they become competitive in the WIVC. Is that the conference that Pittsfield outgrew when they joined the suburban springfield conference?

Have a niece that is a Jr. at Routt and a nephew, her brother, who's in 3rd grade at Our Savior. They are just hoping by the time he graduates grade school Routt is still open. Heck, they're also hoping Our Savior will remain open thru GS.
I'm no President Trump fan but thank you sir for your comments in regard to the NFL and those protesting our nations anthem. You were spot on!!!

Per a couple different twitter sources, co-op voted down by a conference vote of 6-5. 7 votes required for conference approval.

I admit I don't know anything about it but a no vote seems rather cruel if a program's very survival is at stake

I just read Dave Kane's article at sj-r.com and I think the brown county coach sounds like a completely delusional conspiracy theorist

Article from Chris Duerr of KHQA in Quincy with some additional details regarding why Lutheran and Routt co op didn't go through: http://khqa.com/sports/content/no-op-wi ... all-fusion

One interesting note that someone else on twitter brought up is that 2 of the schools that voted it down also are co-ops.

Yeah, a team that has won eight games in six years is suddenly going to become Quincy Notre Dame. This isn't basketball, where one or two kids are going to have a big impact. You've got to get a lot of kids interested--kids that have to be willing to invest at least an hour commuting time a day just to play football. What are the odds of that happening?

Yeah, my point exactly. It seems like the "no" votes wanted to preserve the conference punching bag. Disingenuous to offer lame excuses like "oh they're going to become an overnight powerhouse " so lame.

Other thought that I had is that this is their way at getting back at Routt who more or less dominated a lot of those schools for the better part of two decades.

Correct me if I'm wrong bluejay but didn't Pittsfield leave that conference to become the punching bag for their current conference? And what would WIVC members say if they floated the idea of a return?

I think they were in the West Central conference or whatever it was called before they went to the Sangamo.

And Pittsfield's always been a unique situation in that other than the Quincy schools, they've been the big dog in that part of the state.

Sj-r.com sportswriter Ryan Mahan publicly castigates the " no " voters in today's edition. Calls them out.

Per SJR article by Dave Kane posted tonight. there was a "do over" vote and the conference will allow the Lutheran-Routt co-op after all. Halleluja.

Amazing what some sunlight on dubious decisions can accomplish. I'm just glad they eventually decided to give it a try. Football at the small school level may be in for some major problems as far as numbers and it may come quicker than people think.

Here's the Kane article from the SJ-R: http://www.sj-r.com/sports/20180502/lut ... o-approval

And it appears that there was one school that flipped their vote from the last time that ended up changing the fortunes for this
co-op:
