The bleachers on both sides at Babcook are treacherous. They flex and twist in places, planks have popped up (seen too many people trip) and the student section has at least one bleacher that has a split in it. I cannot believe they pass any sort of inspection. It's embarrassing the state of the facilities with exception of the playing surface and the Plex. As an alum, fan and tax payer, I think it's time to follow through on getting the updates done.

Sat on the visitor bleachers yesterday watching my son at camp. Noticed many cracks in the bleachers. I agree as a tax payer let's get this fixed. Who do we talk to? And I'll offer up free labor as well

Those inspections are a joke. To my knowledge the only bleachers that have been condemned through an inspection were the old Metamora visiting bleachers which had been moved from the old Malone Field. Morton's visiting bleachers were so unsafe that I would not allow my daughter to attend a game there yet year after year they barely passed the inspection. So Washington's bleachers are just fine! 8 )
I favor capital punishment. But there are alot of cases where I don't think capital punishment applies (parking violations) and cases where it should be applied (murder, child molestation, illegal HS football recruiting).- BirdWatcher

Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen - I would think for that alone that the district would want to take care of the problem

I'm thinking with the uncertainty of Springfield funding schools, even though they (Springfield) gets the income from all the different taxes they claim to be for schools, they may be waiting to find out if they'll be getting the funding their supposed to get.

My impression is the money has already been allocated for the bleachers years ago and can't go into other projects or funding. That would rule out Springfield. The money didn't include construction but that was taken care of by Washington residents pre-tornado. I'm sure the help with construction is ready to go now.

Hell, it feels normal now to have bleachers that work like rocking chairs.

.Much of the funding for schools in Illinois comes from property taxes, which the guv says are highest in the country. If he gets what he wants in his "grand bargain" including a property tax freeze (I believe he wants four years) the added stress of cities not being able to vote for a raise to keep schools afloat could be devastating.

I don't think, as I understand it, that the amount going to Springfield is the problem. It's getting the money back from them due to the budget impasse and the amount of debt they have built up living on the "credit card".

Nope, at least as far as I know, that’s why I used the word “may”. But the admin put it out there and the plan and $$ was previously approved before it was put on hold after 11-17-13 so there is hope it will finally happen.

I've heard they plan to use the same concrete company for both the band room addition and the bleachers. Get both projects up and running together while that company is on site. Initially, I thought there was going to be some donated labor for part of the bleachers renovations. I'm not sure where that stands.

.If those projected enrollment figures are accurate 6A football will be coming to Washington eventually. Last season the smallest school in 6A (real numbers) making the postseason was 1403. Although enrollment has already been established for this season (per IHSA rules done the previous year usually by Set.30) one would assume the Panthers should still be 5A for the 2018/19 season. After two horrible years Hilltopper fans are counting on a very talented JCA squad (many on this team being courted by colleges) to make a run in 5A and of course the Broncos from Montini are back into that class.... 5A should be fun again especially if JCA would happen by chance to land in the south bracket in postseason play.

Will WCHS be in violation of ADA by making GBG walk to the west side to see his brick?

Bleachers construction was to already be started. However, the bid process for concrete did not get done in a timely matter and everything else stemmed upon that process. So, looking at May of 2019. There are some pretty unhappy people that this isn’t getting done, yet again. I hope they do some major bandaid work on the existing bleachers on both sides to get through another season. They are well beyond needing replaced and dangerous in some spots. The state of the seating and press boxes are embarrassing.

WTH?? How long does the bid take? Of course with government / union rules it costs more and takes longer

With the high expectations of the upcoming season, it would’ve been nice to have it finally done. It’s been a long drawn out saga.

What an embarrasment!! Whomever is responsible should be fired or voted out of office. I suspect it may be some foot dragging by those who aren't really in favor of the project.
