Picks for runner of the year

Post by 225guy » Sun Nov 06, 2016 9:20 pm

No clear slam dunk on girls side. Shelby slitman 1723 fastest time at state. Fran verville 17:36 and lead Dunlap to 2nd place team, or grace breitback 1735 who beat Fran by one place at state. I'd go with Fran.
The boys side is easy. Metamora had top 2 boys in area. But one the stands alone at top again, Jake Gillium.

I'd lean towards Shelby Slitman just because she had the best area time at state by 13 seconds. Both Fran and Shelby had great seasons. They also both won their respective regionals and sectionals. Breitback had a great race at state, but Fran usually beat her during the season (including at regionals and sectionals) so I don't think I'd give her the award over Fran (or Shelby), especially because it was only a 1 second difference at state. As you said, the boys side is pretty easy to decide. Gillum hasn't lost to anyone from the area all season. I wouldn't be surprised to see Glaub be the area runner of the year the next three years if nothing crazy happens. Glaub was the fastest freshman in 2A at state by 16 seconds and the second fastest freshman across all three classes (Methner ran 8 seconds faster in 3A). I know there isn't an "area team of the year of the award," but if there was the Dunlap girls team and the Metamora boys team would be my 2 picks with an honorable mention to the Elmwood boys team for finishing 5th in 1A. It was a great season and with our two best teams from the area returning 6 of their top 7's along with a lot of other solid young teams also in the mix, there's reason to believe next season might be even better!

Franny and Shelby raced head-to-head once this year, Runnin' Red Invite. Franny won by 40 seconds. That has to count for something.

13 seconds faster at State > 40 seconds at some invite

Senior>Junior if close. 17:23 is a legit time. I believe dunlap school record if she went there. Wink wink
Fran did lead 2nd place team, now that counts for something along with her 1736 state.

Shelby ran first race on very soggy grass.... lol i heard excuses about soggy grass. Man didnt aaa boy run 14:02 for a huge pr. Or Belvidere top 6. Or Grace B. for notre dame... stop with soggy grass. Or shelby's 17:23 even that much more IMPRESSIVE first race of day 9am lots of mildew. She peaked when it mattered and ran fastest area girls time all year. BTW all newpapers and state champs reported perfect day.

In some years, the ROY seems to come down to whoever was fastest at State, almost regardless of anything else done throughout the season. If it is truly a "Runner of the YEAR" award, then it is Franny Verville, hands-down (or feet-down, perhaps?) :D If we want it to be Runner of the State Meet, then the clock tells the tale, and it goes to Shelby Siltman.

Grace Breitbach had a strong season and ran an excellent race at State, but in the big picture didn't have the edge over the season, or the quickest time at State. Kari Lalumandier also should receive mention... and if they were on any other team, Abby Johnson and Ayah Aldadah would also gain mention!

1) Isn't the purpose of the season to gradually build up to peak during the state series? So wouldn't an award of the best runner of the season put most of it's emphasis towards the state series?
2) Let's say we are comparing their seasons and using that as the major decider for the award. They ran mostly different meets and at different courses the majority of the season and against different competition (for the most part). So most of their times are not all that comparable. Both runners ran very well at these meets throughout the year. So far it seems like roughly a draw to me here, maybe slight edge to Verville, but not "hands down". Now let's look at the two races I could find that they both ran at. At FTTF, they both ran pretty much exactly the same time (Siltman was 0.6 seconds faster), so that is a draw. However, at the Runnin' Red Invite, Verville was a good 40 seconds ahead of Siltman. Is this the meet that we are using to say Verville had a better season and should win this award? I don't feel like a single invitational should decide this award over the state meet, because that's really what it would boil down to here. As was said earlier, 13 seconds faster at state is greater than 40 seconds faster at an invite.
3) Siltman's best time this season at Detweiller (17:23) is faster than Verville's (17:30). That 17:23 is also only 3 seconds back of Verville's best time all season anywhere (17:20 at the Runnin' Red).
4)This should not really be a consideration for the award, but in cases like these were it is sort of close and one is a senior and one is junior, can't you just go with the senior?

I am not trying to take away from Verville winning this award. I think she was very deserving and had an excellent season! I hope she comes back next year and does even better (along with Dunlap getting that state title :D ). I just felt the edge should have went to Siltman is all.

The difficulty in comparing the two lies in the fact that they only ran head-to-head once (Runnin' Red Invite). FTTF comparison can almost be tossed out the window given the conditions of the course. The best conditions of the day (none were good) were during the class A girls race, the first race of the day. The course got worse through the first four races, with the turns getting more torn up and muddier as the day went on. Girls 2A race ran on a worse course.

Siltman did not win her conference meet while Verville did. Siltman lost to Clausen (Normal UHigh), a runner Verville beat several times, twice in the state series (sectional and state).

The two did not run head-to-head at state. Context becomes an issue when comparing state times. Siltman's first mile put her in a comfortable group of five battling for second, three-four seconds ahead of the next group. Her first mile time in the 2A race, assuming she could have run under control and ran that time) would have put her somewhere between 25-30 with dozens of runners within a few seconds of her. I would suggest that is going to change how one races. Those thirteen seconds could disappear quickly if they run in the same race.

I will agree that they both had good seasons, but I think the Journal Star made the right decision in this case (and yes, I'm biased).

Where's is Gillum going to college?
On girls side 17:20 metamora i thought fran hardest race. Never looked comfortable at all the whole race. Back in 5th throught first 2 plus miles took lead with 600 clearly was going to win and lost to her teamate w
Abby Johnson who lead from start and ended up winning after fran stumble. Really abby johnson best race. Fran finnish was like state in track and xc.... fran better talent but something to watch in track finals. Both could of won usually tie go to senior. Oh well. Fran team was 2nd. Tie breaker prolly to journal star.
****No part of state was bad out perfect day for fast times. Fastestest 25th times in years in aa girls. 1752. Aaa boys crazy fast 14:47. 4 boys under 14:12 in aaa race. Stop making yourself feel better. Its was great out if you wanted to run super fast!

Good. I don't think he has ever run a post season race because of basketball. I think I saw several of the guys working out at Black Partridge yesterday, so I'm guessing both the Freshman guys were working out for Footlocker too.

Fran V. of Dunlap ran with something to prove at indoor top times over the weekend. An impressive 11:00/5:10 double! Good sign to an early season!
