Runner of the Year?

Post by RedRun » Wed Nov 08, 2017 9:13 pm

So who ya got? Girls: Campbell Petersen and/or Emma Argo? Finalists probably COULD include Franny, Ayah and Abby Johnson all of Dunlap as well. Jacobs of Washington is very strong...

Realistically it has to be between the first two...

Boys? A little tougher now.... I don't see a clear-cut favorite... Hoffman and Dunkel of Elmwood... Skaggs, Habeger, Dunkelbarger of Pekin maybe? Gilbert came on very well late in the season...

I would add Breitbach from PND to the girls finalists. I would say Petersen for ROY (but it might be biased :D )

The guys are hard. Gilbert had a great state series and state meet but was ordinary most of the season. Skaggs was really good during the season and didn't have a great state series or state meet. Dunkel and Hoffman lead their team to a state title, but their times are not great compared to 2A and 3A guys. Dunkelbarger gets lost a little in the 3A mix, but he was a solid runner all season. Owen Haberger from IVC would actually be my vote. Solid times all season, great state series, as good as anyone time-wise at the state meet. It's not an easy decision.

Boys Adam Glaubfastest runner during season, if not bc no post season only 2 candidates Chris Gilbert and Elmwoods all star(15;31) who lead his team to state title. Skaggs did what? Got smoked by Adam during regular season then crushed by Gilbert in the meet the means the most.
1) Adam, 2nd choice Gilbert, Elmwood boy

Girls side only one choice ms Campbell ran fastest state time by 19 seconds over Ms. ARGO plus lead Dunlap to first state title. It's dunlap girls and Campbell Pederson dynasty.

Hoffmann ran 15:21--not 15:31 . Owen H was fastest by 4 seconds. Pekin kid ran 15:20. Gilbert 15:15 --not exactly huge differences in time. I would only say that top runners on a trophy contending team often have responsibility to keep pack together for part of the race. Team race is won at 3-5 spots. Individual runners or runners on teams that are not in trophy contention, can focus solely on their race. I would imagine lots of pressure on runners from a team ranked in top 3 most of the year. All names mentioned are worthy candidates... Does being the best runner on the best team count? Not sure but it does not hurt. Glaub is obviously the best runner but I cannot see anyway he can win this award.

This should be no contest regarding the boys side. Adam Glaub is by far the best runner in the area. If it wasn't for his accomplishments throughout the season, the "team" would of had no chance at competing for a Mid-Illini crown. Unfortunately Metamora had just been in the news for handling their athletes wrong, but I won't get into details. It ultimately affected Adam's chances at this award and the rest of the season. IMO Metamora's administration should be taking some heat for this publicly.

Andy is definitely the best runner in the area..hands down. Do not know all the details of what he did and this is not the place to discuss that. Hopefully he will bounce back in track and next year in xc --I am sure he will. I will still say that the remaining runners are so closely grouped that I would go with the top runner(s) off the top team. Elmwood beat ND and Metamora head to head plus they won state. Anyone familiar with Elmwood XC knows that the goal each season is to win a trophy and some times the top runners sacrifice personal accomplishments to keep 3,4, and 5 runners where they need to be. Nothing against the runner from PND but he did not have much pressure on him at state neither did IVC, EP, Pekin, or Tremont runners. That being said, congratulations to whoever wins it. Cannot wait for track season!

did Not know Illini West was included . Jacob Bryan ran 15:08 at state. Won the regional race over Hoffmann. Was 6th in the Elmwood Sectional... toughest in the state in 1a. 3 runners who beat him at Sectional were ahead of him at State. Not sure how this is chosen . Congrats to Owen who had great season and career.

Congrats to Owen. 1547 personal best then dropped a 15:17. Always knew talented from grade school. Just at a program not known for running. So some college will probably get a sleeper. Lots of unused talent just needs a team!
