Coaching Changes

Post by crkamm » Fri Jun 22, 2018 8:07 am

Anyone heard any official news on new coaches for area teams?

I know Morton Girls and Dunlap Girls both had retirements this spring. Any news?

Dunlap girls coach Pat Garst did retire after two consecutive state titles. Interviews are currently taking place for his replacement.
Dunlap boys track coach Mark Klokkenga also retired. Long-time assistant coach Chris Friedman is taking over the program.

See, I was told by some Dunlap parents that the girls coach was all but decided before the season ended. Premature?

Not saying premature, just saying what is occurring. I've been around long enough to know you never jump the gun.

Both Dunlap head track coaches will face a much more difficult state picture next year. Dunlap is 3A. I don't know much about the boys side, but the top Dunlap girls could make finals next year, but I don't see them as a top threat. The girls scored 102 points last year to take 2A. They would have scored, I think I heard, 29 points last year in 3A which would have placed them 6th. 3A track is just a whole different level.

Now, the girls will still be very strong locally. The team might not be as dominant as they have been the last couple of years, but there are still some excellent athletes there.

Congratulations to Amanda Young (aka Duvendack) on becoming the next head girls track coach at Dunlap.
Both teams, boys and girls, will have a tough road to hoe in 3A. However, both teams have quality coaching staffs and some strength returning, especially the girls. Both teams are ready for the challenge.
