IHSA sectionals May 20-21
IHSA state May 26, 27 and 28

Here's a look at a state singles champion favorite.
Deerfield's Budic will probably be the 1 seed. He will have spent 1 semester, this semester, at Deerfield.

And a mention of another favorite, Libertyville's Tsorotiotis, who won't be competing.

Sectional seed meetings are Wednesday evening.

Hinsdale Central has won the last 4 state titles and 7 of last 9 with New Trier winning the other 2. Those teams are the team favorites again since contenders Deerfield, Highland Park, Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South and Lake Forest are all in the same sectional and won't be able to qualify their whole team for state.

The individual singles title should be wide open for the first time in many years. Previous seasons included highly ranked national players. Last year included Martin Joyce (Hinsdale Central, #6 nationally class of 2015), Eddie Grabill (HC, #42 nationally 2015), Gianni Ross (Lyons, #3 nationally 2017), Alex Ross (Lyons, #53 nationally 2015) and Ben VanDixhorn (Libertyville, #69 nationally 2015).

Illinois just doesn't have top 100 national players this year with Gianni Ross taking up residence at the USA player development center in Florida. The top ranked senior and only top 100 player, Kris Ortega, doesn't play high school tennis nor does the only other top 100 player in the other 3 classes.

This will also be the first time in many years that none of the top 6 finishers are back to compete with Joyce, G. Ross, A. Ross, Grabill, VanDixhorn and Noah Rosenblatt all gone.

Look for the top 8 seeds to come from seniors Vuk Budic (Deerfield), Mack Galvin (Rolling Meadows), Brandon Ancona (Rockford Christian), Brett Meyers (Nequa Valley), Nate Dell (Glenbard West), Tom Bickel (New Trier), juniors Mark Wu (GBN), Jacob Edelchik (Highland Park), Anderson Park (Belvidere North) and sophomore Jack Randall (Lockport).

Dunlap sectional now looking like Richwoods as Metamora unseeded player upset #2 seed from Dunlap. Then RHS #3 seed defeated Metamora's other singles entry.

Looking like RHS, Metamora then Dunlap.

Crazy year.

Normal U High cruising through Bloomington sectional.

Revised list for top 8 seeds now that sectionals are complete:

Budic, Galvin, Ancona, Meyers, Dell, Wu, Edelchik, Park plus Lyons senior Jack Bernstein.

Scott Bickel won his sectional but his twin brother Tom defaulted both Saturday matches. I'm not sure if Scott will be a top 8 or if Tom will be either now. New Trier trying to work the system.

I thought that IHSA penalizes players defaulting on Saturday matches.

Difficult to say. Tom Bickel defaulted both Saturday matches and dropped to 17-32.

New Trier doubles team who did the same got a 5-8.

This year's singles is definitely wide open. There are 17-32 seeds who have defeated 5-8 seeds in the past fall/winter.

Mid-Illini looking pretty good. We have Victor rolling into the quarters against singles #1 seed. Redbirds #1 doubles still in backdraw. Had to play #1 doubles seed today before losing.

Richwoods doubles in a third set for 5th place. This is their 4th match today. The Knights came back from a set deficit to win in 3 their last match. It was against a Downers Grove South team who knocked the Knights out of title contention.

Dunlap singles finished 9th-12th place being eliminated by a Highland Park player for the third year in a row. It won't happen a 4th year in a row. ;)

Former Lagrange Lyons player Gianni Ross competing today in the French Open boys draw.

I'm guessing Ross walks away with the ihsa singles title this year if still in school. :D

Gianni defeated the 10 seed yesterday and is now in the round of 16. He's won a total of 4 matches so far including his qualifying matches.

Pretty nice just one year removed from ihsa competition.
