PJS Scoreboard Page - Tennis Results

Post by illini25 » Wed Aug 27, 2014 2:50 pm

Anyone have a guess as to why the Journal Star now reports only "singles winners" and "doubles winners" instead of the traditional of "Smith d Jones 6-4, 6-3"?

I know area coaches rely on newspapers for keeping track of results for things like in-season tournament seeding, sectional seeding and conference honors. Opponents and scores are very important for these purposes. This new format will make things more difficult than it already was with not much more reported other than scores called in by schools.

I also heard that the way golf results are reported on the scoreboard page has also changed.

This is a TERRIBLE change by the newspaper. It will make tracking in-season results for other schools impossible. It is yet another blow in a long line of decreasing tennis coverage. The change for golf (only showing the medalist rather than the four counting scores per team) is equally pitiful.

Kudos the the PJS decision makers for continually marginalizing the efforts of "second tier" sports. Meanwhile, can't wait for the 36-page football preview tomorrow.

There is more and more negative comments from PJS subscribers. From the quality of the newspaper, content , and the delivery. Whatever the case, KW warned all of us about this in his article a couple weeks ago. I did do a comparison of content when I visited friends that subscribe to the Bloomington Pantagraph. The size of the paper isn't much different, but I thought that the sports section had a lot more coverage versus the PJS.

As another high school sports year starts to accelerate, time to a clear up a couple of misconceptions.

First, this paper is not the Peoria Journal Star, even though both are owned by the same company and now pool many more limited resources than ever before due to sizeable staff reductions.

Secondly, while the PJS has made the recent decision to cut back on its prep coverage of and information needed from area high schools, we at the Pekin Times are not changing our coverage of our area high schools at all. We still want to hear about all athletic events with box scores sent to us, and we will still be putting full box scores and highlight packages in our paper regarding all of those events.

That said, we encourage area coaches to continue to send in event results and as much information as possible about them to us so we can continue to provide the best possible coverage of your high school athletic events as we can.
