Soccer player of the year - Boys

Post by Peoriasports2 » Sun Jul 20, 2014 7:28 pm

I am looking for a listing of the Boys Soccer Player of the Year going back 15 to 20 years. Does anyone have a listing for these years?

In looking at POY, this is what I have found:
1998 - Drew Meyer
2000 - PJ Blackford
2001 - Phil Clemmer
2003 - Nick Cicciarelli
2005 - Rudy Garcia
2006 - Packy Amundsen
2007 - Ross VanOsdol
2008 - Dominic Bonello
2009 - Vince Cicciarelli
2010 - Vince Cicciarelli
2011- Alex Garcia
2012 - Alex Garcia and Drew Whalen
2013 - Grayson McGraw

Can anyone verify these Player of the Year or add to this listing?

going to be tough to pick a player of the year this year. pnd looks like the best team again and it is hard to even pick out their best player.

I think there is no clear POY but if PND or any other area team can make a run to the state tournament then a player from one of those squads will be picked. post season is where players separate themselves.

i have watched notre dame the last 4 games or so and #4 (i think a transfer from dunlap) and #21 are clearly their best offensive players and #15 really stands out defensively--they are all juniors, none are very big, but play really hard

With Aiden Hill scoring two goals against Dunlap in the sectional championship game, I believe it makes him the front runner for POY. He has been the play maker all year for the Irish. But, just my opinion.

Given the parity this year, I'd look at total points - assists and goals. I can't think of any starters this year that had D1 potential.

And once again I must take issue with the DI mindset with people. I guess I must first ask the question...if you are not so called DI material, does that mean your not as talented? I have said for years, not all athletes are going to be DI, not because of their talent, but because of the fit for them. Ask Bradley basketball players about that pesky DIII Augustana, those were some pretty good basketball players. Anyone ever heard of Messiah. A DIII school that has been a perennial soccer power for years, that recruits and gets the best talent and wins, year after year after year, mostly national championships. I just get upset that the mindset is the best only go DI...not true. Okay, I feel better now.

It is the highest level of amateur soccer in the country. You cited one example of a dynasty in DIII. The competition level across the board isn't the same. Just like any other sport: Wisconsin Whitewater is a D III football powerhouse. Northwest Missouri State is a D II football powerhouse. You have powerhouses across all divisions. But multiple DI programs have multiple high school All Americans. I doubt any DIII schools have many if any. That's not a knock on DIII, but there is a reason that DI programs, across all sports not just soccer, are considered higher than DIII.

I never stated that DI wasn't a higher level, I said to stop inferring that if an athlete doesn't play DI , his or her talent level is less. Over the broad spectrum that is true, but to say that because an athlete does not play DI college that they are not as gifted or talented, just isn't true. And again for example, how did Bradley fair against Augustana.

Congratulations to Aiden Hill on a great year and being recognized as player of the year by the Journal Star. Whether or not Aiden gets a D1 scholarship or not does not take away from his accomplishments this year at ND. I, myself, believe he has the talent that will get him a D1 scholarship, but time will only tell. Again, congrats to Aiden.

Ugh, I don't think Bradley is a good comparison for anything anymore.
