Galesburg Silver Streaks 2017-18

Post by gbbfan1 » Sat Oct 28, 2017 3:39 pm

First Day of Practice

Monday is the first day of practice. The volleyball team lost in their first match of the Regional; finished 14-17. So much for that ****.

At least the 4 starters and top 3 subs will have the full 2 weeks of preseason practice. Given all the new, inexperienced players, lots of ground to cover; maybe some tweeks on off. and def. sets; hopefully, extra work on individual skills after practice? None of them have touched a basketball in 3 ½ months. Need to be ready right out of the gate. They will play 4 games in the first 5 days of the season. Three days after that, they go to Rock Island.

“While you’re not working, someone else is getting better.”-Allen Iverson

There’s no traffic in the extra mile.

More later.

Streaks Start Practice
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2017103 ... s-practice

If Massey is talking about Lingafelter moving into a starting spot, the experiment with Sampson at Wing this summer didn't work out . Lingafelter played Wing last year; or maybe she's going to play 2G this year.

Summer Ball Review

Roster
Kelsi Legge 5’7” PG JR. *#
Lauryn Campbell 5’8” 2G SR. *#
Andrea Sampson 5’6” Wing JR. *#
Emily Meinert 5’11” F SR. *#
Yvonne Mixon 5’10” F SR. *#
Chloe McCarthy 5’8” G JR. *
Daija Range 5’7” F JR. *
Hannah Huppenbauer 6’2” F SR. *
Megan Lingafelter 5’6” Wing SR.
Rylee Chockley 5’4” G SR.
Anna Gugliotta 5’8” F SR.
Alexia Tucker 5’7” F JR.
Kaitlyn Pendergast 5’7” G JR.
*- Core players Massey played against good teams
#- Starters

As one might expect, pretty ragged at the start. Inexperienced players put into new, important roles. Also, some adjusting to jump from Soph. to Varsity level.
As summer progressed, they did a pretty good job of adjusting to their roles, and gelling as a unit.
Overall, some progress- although not always consistent. At times, one step forward, one step back.
They played a lot of small schools, so this must be factored in when evaluating their level of play.
They have several areas that need improvement when you consider the level of competition they will face during the season.

IMHO-Most improved players over the summer:
Emily Meinert 5’11” F-improved footwork; stronger posting up, going to the rim; rugged defender/rebounder; high intensity.
Kelsi Legge 5’7” PG-improved at getting team into offense; stronger at getting inside off the dribble; improving jumper; solid defensively; just overall a tough kid.

Future Sliver Streaks

About three weeks ago, I went out to the High School to watch our two middle schools, Churchill and Lombard, 7th and 8th grade teams play.
You never want to project too much on a player at this age, but I did see four 8th graders, based on their athleticism and physical play, who, I think, could develop into solid Varsity players-particularly, a post and a Guard/Forward.

Two things:
First-Both the 7th and 8th grade games were intense, physical take-no-prisoners. Bodies on the floor for every loose ball. In-your-face, body-up defense. Give-and-take, no backing down from physical contact. This type of play must be ingrained in middle school. Girls basketball is not touchy-feely. You have to play that way to compete.

Second-Coming out of the locker room before the start of the 3rd qtr., the teams ran out on the floor together as a team. It shows energy, unity. I will look for that at the high school this year. That sorry straggling out in ones and twos just plain looks bad; lazy, undisciplined.

The other thing is for the Galesburg bench to get their butts off their chairs and get actively engaged in the game. Look at Morton. When a player makes a big play, the whole bench jumps up and shouts encouragement. When a player comes off the floor, the entire bench comes out on the floor to greet her and slap hands.

I remember the years of Massey’s great teams that went to the State Finals six straight years (A, AA era). When those teams were in tough, close games down to the wire, with the game on the line, the players on the bench all stood up together and clasped hands in unity with their teammates on the court. I haven’t seen that around here for a long time.

“Have everyone on the bench stand for the man coming out of the game”.-Dean Smith-Hall of Fame former Head Coach North Carolina Men’s Basketball

“Me, we, my coaching staff, put a huge premium on body language, and if your body language is bad, you will never get in the game. Ever. I don’t care how good you are…when I look at my team, they know this. When I look at game film, I’m checking what’s going on on the bench, and if somebody doesn’t care, somebody’s not engaged, they will never get in the game. Ever. And they know that. They know I’m not kiddin’.”- Geno Auriemma, Head Coach UConn Women’s Basketball- 11 National Championships

Kelsi Legge 5’7” PG Jr.
Alexia Tucker 5’7” F Jr.
Kaitlyn Pendergast 5’7” G Jr.
Riley Jenkins 5’5” PG Fr.

Knowns
-More size at all starting spots-especially in post.
-Should be pretty good defensively-aggressive, good quickness, sound fundamentally.
-Solid rebounding.
-Emily Meinert- Given her play over the summer, she has emerged as a leader. Toughness, intensity, non-stop motor. Solid in all areas.
Unknowns
-Meinert-Fatigue; going to get beat up pretty good inside, double-teamed. Will there be enough depth in post to allow her to get enough rest in close games vs. good teams to have anything left late 4th qtr..
-Given so much inexperience, just about every phase (offense, in particular).
-Guards- Quicker release; better preparation to catch-and-shoot; pull-up jumper; dribble penetration.
-Execution vs. pressure defense- fc press, half-court trap.
-Switch/recover, slide over top on screens.
-Bench depth.

I would guess this season is going to have it’s ups-and-downs.

Galesburg at Rock Island
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2017112 ... ock-island

Rock Island (4-0)-Lake Zurich Tournament; avg. margin 30+pts.
Return
4 starters
Breanna Beal 6’1” Wing Jr
http://www.espn.com/high-school/girls-b ... eanna-beal
Chryslyn Carr 5’5” G Sr.- Signed with Texas Tech
Lauren Hall 5’9” F Sr.
Dellaney Anderson 5’10’ F Sr.
Bench
Sophia Thomer 5’3” G Sr.
Anne Awour 6’4” F So.
Jameshia Walls 5’8” F Jr.

Excellent Fr./So. Team-should add to depth.

In the past, Hoover would use 9-10 players in 1st half; constant full-court pressure on ball-either press or one-on-one; trap at half court, overplay and jump passing lanes; half-court D, always looking to overplay and jump passing lanes on ball reversal.

Hoover has mentioned, at times other players tend to stand around and watch Beal and Carr; probably will use this game to work on areas he feels need improvement.

Broken record: Galesburg must take better care of ball.

United Township at Galesburg
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2017112 ... n-thursday

Last year- UT 41-37, Gales 48-42
Lost
3 starters-including leading scorer Davianna Buchanan
Return
2 starters
Ryleigh O’Brien 6’0’ F Sr.
Brandi LaFountaine 5’10” F Jr.-missed Gales Thanksgiving Tournament-IHSA Swimming Finals
Bench
Calie Walker 5’4” G Sr.
London Jackson 5’3” G Sr.
1st Year-both appear to be starters
Isabella Sims 5’5” G Fr.-3 3pters vs. Alleman
Davianna Morgan 5’5” G So.-2 3pters vs. Alleman

Last year, UT played zone. The UT coach got a good look at Galesburg in our Thanks. Tourn. So you would expect they would play zone; maybe come out m-t-m, adjust if necessary. Also, it doesn’t appear UT has much depth behind O’Brien and La Fountaine. Galesburg does a good job of getting the ball into the post vs. m-t-m; potential foul trouble. Sampson and Legge have been able to take the ball inside off dribble vs. m-t-m. We’ll see. Since Galesburg has had several days to prepare, you would hope their zone offense will be improved.

Whatever problems Galesburg is having, their post play is not one of them.
Meinert- 9.3 pts., 6.0 reb
Mixon- 6.8 pts., 5.2 reb
Range-3.2 pts., 6.0 reb
They are +8.6 reb/gm

Boils down to guard play-I discussed this in Nov. 9 post.
-Shooting-especially vs. zone.
-Ball handling vs. fc press, half-court trap.

Level of competition, while still good, is going to drop significantly from here on.

Galesburg 62 United Township 41
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2017113 ... win-column

UTHS 04-13-27-41
Gales 08-23-39-62

Announcer's Stats
Legge- 8pts., 8-11 FTs, 3 reb, 6 assists, 4 steals
McCarthy-1 pt., 1-2 FTs, 3 reb
Sampson- 14pts., 4 2pt. FGs, 2 3pt. FGs, 0-1 FT, 4 reb, 1 assist, 1 steal
Meinert- 6 2pt. FGs, 6-11 FTs, 3 reb, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks
Mixon-12 pts., 5 2pt. FGs, 2-2 FTs, 10 reb, 1 assist, 3 steals, 2 blocks
Range-2 reb
Campbell-1 pt., 1-2 FTs, 1 reb, 3 steals
Lingafelter- 3 pts., 1 3pt. FG, 1 reb, 3 steals
Jenkins-2 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 1 reb
Pendergast-3 pts., 1 3pt. FG
16-31 2pt. FGs, 4-22 3pt. FGs 17-28 FTs, Reb- Gales 32(14) UT 32(13) TOs- Gales 15 UT 25

-UT played every defense in the book-3-2, 1-2-2, 2-3, m-t-m-trying to defend G's inside game; outside shooting not a factor
-Meinert and Mixon hurt UT throughout game on offensive put-backs and post-ups
-Sampson worked baseline- short pull-up jumpers, layups; couple of 3's
-Good ball movement- a lot of open 3pt. looks-atrocious shooting; fortunate inside game compensated
-Defensively, guards did a good of getting over the high screen, so posts didn't have to come out much to help; allowed them to stay with screener, hinder roll to basket
-As has been the case in most games, all 3 posts very active, solid defensively
-Legge's quickness and length frustrated UT's PG; made it tough for them to get into an offensive flow

-A trend is developing, and it's not a good one. The post players have to come up big every time out to compensate for G's terrible 3pt. shooting.
-Sampson and Legge need to be able to get into the seams of zone; disregarding G's outside shooting, zones will pack it in, closing down seams; rather than having to extend to hinder outside shot, opening up seams.

They play at Lincoln Tuesday. They play a tough, physical 1-2-2. G's shooting 4-22 3's at home does not bode well for road game.

Galesburg at Lincoln (6-1, 3-0 in Apollo Conference)
The Register-Mail didn’t deem it worthwhile to preview tonight’s game. They use part-timers to cover the girls. The Sports Editor covers the boys. In the last 7 years, the girls have won 5 Regionals and 1 Sectional. Since 2002, the boys have won 1 Regional.

Last year- Lincoln 48-35; Lincoln’s fc press and 1-2-2 zone completely disrupted Gales. Massey,”…Their defense disrupted us…we became very frustrated…we were disoriented.” I’m assuming Lincoln will do the same defensively this year.

Return
Starters
Kaelyn Froebe 5’7” G Sr.–Last year, Galesburg couldn’t guard her-21pts.
Morgan Lolling 5’7” G Sr.
Kennedy Lolling 5’6” G Sr.
Bench
Haley Hicks 5’4’ G Sr.
Emma Koncyzk 5’9” Jr.
Leah Schneider 6’1” So.
Starting lineup(?)
Emma Koncyzk 5’9” Jr.
Kennedy Lolling 5’6” Sr.
Kaelyn Froebe 5’7” Sr.-leading scorer
Leah Schneider 6’1” So.-2nd leading scorer
Morgan Lolling 5’4” Sr.

Lincoln’s strengths go right at Galesburg’s weaknesses-outside shooting, execution vs. fc press and zone. As I said before, if they don’t feel they have to respect Galesburg’s 3pt. shooting, they will pack that zone in, closing down the seams. Galesburg needs Legge and Sampson to get into the gaps; makes post entry more difficult. Galesburg must force Lincoln to widen the zone. Open looks available on wings and baseline. Hopefully, Galesburg's posts will continue solid offensive rebounding. It's more difficult to rebounds defensive boards out of zone; guarding a space rather than a specific player.

Lincoln 45 Galesburg 23

http://www.lincolndailynews.com/NEWS/sports_zz.shtml

Gale 04-11-18-23
Linc 14-20-26-45

Announcer’s Stats
Legge-2pts., 2-2 FTs
McCarthy-5 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 1 3pt. FG,0-2 FTs, 1 reb
Sampson-3 pts., 1 3pt. FG, 4 reb
Meinert-4 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 2-2 FTs, 4 reb
Mixon-4 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 4 reb, 4 steals, 1 block
Range-1 pt., 1-3 FTs, 4 reb, 2 blocks
Tucker- 2 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 1 reb
Livingstone-2 pts., 1 2pt. FG
6-21 2pt. FGs, 2-16 3pt. FGs, 5-10 FTs, Reb- Gales 26(11) Linc 23(7), TOs- Gales 32 Linc 25

Lincoln isn’t a particularly good team. Came out 1-2-2 fc press, drop back into 1-2-2 zone; not real great pressure.
For the most part, Galesburg spent the game doing 2 things: 1. Turning the ball over, 2. Ineffectually passing the ball around the perimeter of the packed-in zone.
Once again, Meinert, Mixon, and Range did everything you could ask of them.

1st Qtr.-5 pts., 10 TOs-14-5
2nd Qtr.-6 pts., 9 TOs-20-11
3rd Qtr. -7 pts., 7 TOs-26-18
4th Qtr.-Lincoln 9-0 run 35-18; 4:30-G 1st pts. 1 FT-35-19; 3:30-Massey emptied bench, Lincoln coach did not-5 pts., 6 TOs-45-23

Massey: "…We play a good team…take us out of what we practiced…can’t fight through that…got to change… have to be willing to change…reassess who we’re going with…can’t keep doing this…somebody comes up…gets physical…bumps us…little bit of trapping…just don’t react to it…things don’t go well for us…miss some shots early or defense does something, much of our game becomes rattled…something goes wrong…fade in a hurry…more than concerning…I’ve never experienced a team…seem to fall apart…I challenged them to do some soul searching…"

You become a good shooter by working in open gym all preseason- shooting 100 shots/day; not by running around in a volleyball uniform.
Inexperience is not a valid justification. TOs are the result of a loss of poise. A loss of poise is the result of a lack of mental toughness.

Galesburg 40 RI Alleman 33
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2017120 ... m-pioneers
RIAlm 05-14-23-33
Gales 14-17-26-40

Announcer’s Stats
Legge-4 pts., 4-7 FTs, 4 reb, 1 assist
McCarthy-2 pts., -1 2pt. FG, 3 reb, 1 assist, 2 blocks
Sampson-12 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 2 3pt. FGs, 2-2 FTs, 4 reb, 2 assists, 2 steals
Meinert-13 pts., 4 2pt. FGs, 5-10 FTs, 12 reb, 1 assist, 4 steals, 2 blocks
Mixon-4 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 0-2 FTs, 7 reb, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block
Range-1 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 2 reb
Campbell-3 pts., 1 3pt. FG, 1 steal
10-28 2pt. FGs, 3-13 3pt. FGs, 11-21 FTs, Reb- Gales 40(14) Alle 26(9), TOs- Gales 21 Alle 14

This was an ugly game from start to finish. TOs, poor shooting-both teams-no flow. Every game Alleman plays is ugly; not very athletic; Just grind-at both ends of the floor-a wrestling match; make every team they play look bad.

I can’t really add anything to the R-M narrative, except to emphasize Galesburg's scoring droughts after they built good leads to let Alleman stay close; due more to G's poor shooting and TO's than what Alleman did: 2nd qtr. up 15-8 @5:28, 2pts. rest fo qtr.; 3rd qtr. up 26-18, 5 straight empty possessions, didn't score last 4+ mins.

Again, Galesburg’s dominance on the glass compensated for poor shooting and excessive TOs.

Canton 6-0, 1-0 ? (I couldn’t find the result of last night’s game vs. Pekin) at Galesburg
Last year- Gales 49-43

I couldn’t find much of anything about them other than Aaron Ferguson’s article ranking the Peoria area teams. He mentioned Cassidy Fawsett and Anna Plumer, and that they have a good Jr. class. I understand that they play a lot of players. Usually when a coach rotates a lot of players, it means they play some sort of pressing defense. We’ll see. I guess their best win was vs. Washington 52-41. Galesburg is going to catch it good this afternoon.

The school website doesn’t update the scores. They don’t even have a roster listed.

Canton
-m-t-m entire game, no press.
-Relentless-both ends of court; Players can play multiple positions; not a lot of size; good rebounding-sound fundamentals.
-Offense-deliberate; force defense-extended period; get a breakdown- result-high pct. shot; excellent ballhandling/passing, movement away from ball.
-Sound team defense-overplay passing lanes; close-out on picked up dribble; cut off dribble penetration; make post entry difficult.
-Galesburg- Same old story; terrible outside shooting, excessive TOs, post players lead team.

-G stayed close late 2nd 19-15; C-12-0 run into 3rd qtr. 31-15; 3rd qtr. C even more deliberate offensively; didn't even look for outside shot; 17 3rd qtr. points- 8 layups, 1 Ft from foul on layup; mostly simple pick-and-roll, nobody switches, wide open; oldest play in basketball; probably the first play Naismith ever drew up; nothing else to say; check the stats.

Announcers-"...Something you usually see from Streaks teams missing...change in body language when they get down...A lot of their shots were drives to basket...Streaks just not stepping up...somebody's got to become the leader...some perimeter player has got to say, "Let's take control of this thing"...that's the only way you get anywhere...you have somebody to pull the team in..."
Massey-"...So hard to score...somebody's up 5 points, seems like 10 or 15...post players...really nice job on boards...our shooting magnifies our errors...not a group that spent a lot of time working on their shots in the offseason, and now we're paying the price for that..."

IMO- Fr. PG Riley Jenkins deserves some playing time. At this point, what has he got to lose?
-Everybody knows the PG has got to step up and lead.
-"...not a group that spent a lot of time in the offseason working on their shots...". Correction: no time. Sampson was the only G on this team who worked on her shot in the offseason; the rest played volleyball-and it shows.

Galesburg (5-5, 2-1) at Moline (6-3, 2-1)
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/20171212/no-title

Last year- Gales 62-47, Moline 44-32
Starters
Allanna Crompton 5’10” G/F Sr.- Go-to player; does about everything for them-score, rebound, assists-been a thorn in Galesburg’s side for four years-seems like six.
Leticia Billups 5’11” F Sr.
Hannah Thiele 5’9” 2G Sr.
Megan Pittington 5’10” F Jr.
Bralee Trice 5’7” PG Fr.- scored double-figures last two games.

Bench
Whitney Taylor 5’4” PG So.
Katie Comp 5’9” F Jr.

Wharton Fieldhouse has a terrible shooting background/depth perception; backboards are out in the middle of nowhere. Even when Galesburg had good shooting teams, they had major problems here. This year…….

Moline will play 2-3 zone extended pressure on the ball. This is not going to be pretty.

Moline 51 Galesburg 39

Gales 08-18-25-39
Moln 10-22-34-51

Announcer’s Stats
Legge-1pt. 1-2 FTs, 3 assists
McCarthy-5 pts. 1 2pt. FG, 1 3pt. FG, 1 reb, 2 assists
Sampson- 13 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 3 3pt. FGs, 2-3 FTs, 1 reb, 1 assist
Meinert-15 pts., 4 2pt. FGs, 7-8 FTs, 12 reb, 3 blocks
Mixon-4 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 0-1 Ft, 4 reb
Range-1 pt., 1-4 FTs, 3 reb
8-26 2pt. FGs, 4-19 3pt. FGs, 11-18 FTs, Reb- Gales 28(11) Moline 32(7) TOs- Gales 11 Moline 11

Moline-2-3 zone, basically packed in; gave G Gs open looks, try to take away post entry, dribble penetration.
Gales-Season low TOs; M didn’t really emphasize a great deal of pressure on the ball; lots of open 3pt. looks-didn’t capitalize; nice job on post entry, especially Meinert.
-Although M only single-digit lead until 4th qtr., G never looked like a threat to make a run.
-M opened up 3rd qtr. lead primarily 2 reasons: made post entry more difficult, G settling for 3pt. shots by the wrong people.
- As always, Meinert a tower of strength inside; fighting off 3 5’10”+ players on back line of zone.
-Sampson shot the ball well.
-Fr. PG Riley Jenkins did a nice job backing-up Legge.

Massey Postgame- “…Perimeter kids…took the shots when they were open, didn’t always get them to go down…took the right shots.”

Galesburg goes 4-19 3pt. shots; breakdown: Sampson 3-6, other 5 Gs 1-13. I’m not smart enough to understand why shots by a group who combine for 1-13 are the “right shots”. Those shots are there because the defense doesn’t care if they shoot; not going to force defense to play honest; I guess the strategy is maybe if they take enough shots, some might go in; hoping 1 or 2 of them might “get hot” for a game; hopefully boost the point total to the upper 40's to have a chance to win a game. If they make a shot here and there, it might boost their confidence. Confidence isn’t the major part of the equation. If the mechanics are flawed, they’re never going to consistently make a decent pct.. Doesn’t do much for offensive efficiency. I must be misinformed. I thought the basic tenet of offense is get shots for your best shooters; the best shooters take the most shots-maybe try to find ways to get more shots for your best 3 pt. shooter.

The play-by-play man has a simple-minded habit of saying the shots are, “just short…just long…just a little off line…they’re really close.” That has about as much logic as a guy with a busted flush draw who says, “Gee, I was really close, I had 4 spades.”
