Usually, a team which returns 3 Sr. starters and a 4th Sr. who supplied major minutes off the bench the previous year moving into the starting lineup, has areas which should be considered stable givens heading into the next season. That doesn’t appear to be necessarily so with this team. Last season, Meinert and Mixon supplied tough inside defense, rebounding, scoring, and leadership. Going into the summer, those areas plus outside shooting appear to be question marks. Hopefully, over the course of the summer, the team’s play will indicate that they are moving in the right direction in addressing those areas. Although, the overall level of competition this summer is far below that which they will face in the upcoming season.

The freshman for Morton is Katie Krupa. Dowell hurt her ankle against Richwoods at the ICC league on Wednesday night.

My brain finally put together what her mother told me. I got the Bethel part from her having attended Bethel Lutheran School.
Synapse deterioration.

Summer Basketball Schedule Breakdown

Morton-3A (1)
Peoria-3A (2)
IVC-3A (1)
Lewistown-2A (2)
Knoxville-2A (3)
Mercer Co.-2A (2)
Monmouth/Roseville-2A (3)
Illini West-2A (1)
Orion-2A (1)
Peru (St. Bede)-2A (1)
Central SW-2A (1)
Dee/Mack-2A (1)
Abingdon/Avon-1A (2)
Brimfield-1A (1)

The starters have struggled against some of the 2A teams.
Playing all these 2A schools is a no-win situation. If they play well, it’s…that’s what they’re supposed to do against these small schools. Progress must be qualified with that in mind. If they struggle, which they have, it’s…if these teams give them problems, what happens vs. the 3A and 4A teams on their season schedule?

Realistically, it appears to be at most a 7-player rotation.

Starters
Riley Jenkins 5’5” PG So.
Andrea Sampson 5’6” 2G Sr.
Kelsi Legge 5’7” Wing/PG Sr.-Wing –new position.
Chloe McCarthy 5’8” F Sr.-new position
Daija Range 5’7” F Sr.
Bench
Kaylee Miller 5’5” Wing Jr.
Audree Peck 5’10” F So.

IMO-It would not be unreasonable, thus far, for someone to make the observation that the performance of the veterans has not been commensurate with the extent of their experience.

This weekend, I realized something which hadn’t occurred to me watching Galesburg play. If you put small-school players and large-school players together in a skills competition-shooting, ball handling, whatever-the small-school players will perform at an even level with the bigs. The gap is obviously physicality-athleticism, size, strength.

Quincy, a middle-of-the-pack team in the Western Big 6, physically beat down a couple 2A teams who had previously beaten Galesburg’s starters soundly. They’re a typical WB6 team: big, rugged in the post; strong, quick, physical on the perimeter.

Watching Galesburg, I had been concentrating on skill level and execution. Playing 2A schools, there aren’t noticeable, glaring mismatches, so there isn’t a sense of how small Galesburg actually is- only two players taller than 5’7”. As far as strength, bulk is concerned, Range and Sampson are the only two you might put in that category. As far as the other players who are going to get significant playing time vs. quality teams, they could be described, generously, as slender.

Galesburg will be at a size, strength disadvantage vs. a large majority of their opponents. These players aren’t going to grow 2” or gain 10-15 lbs. As vitally important as offseason work is in improving skills and execution (open gym), it’s just as critical to get stronger (weight training).

“Offseason” means more than just summer.

2018-19 Varsity Schedule (Tentative)
http://masseybasketball.blogspot.com/p/ ... 017-8.html

Lewistown, Knoxville, Brimfield, Mercer Co., Monmouth/Roseville are not on the schedule.

Morton, Rock Island, Danville Schlarman, Washington, Springfield, Canton, Moline, Maine South, United Township, Quincy, Bloomington Central Catholic are. Sobering.

Thanksgiving Tournament (Schedule TBD)

Teams: Danville Schlarman, Springfield, Washington, Springfield SHG, Champaign Central, Champaign St. Thomas More, Rockford East, Metamora, East Moline.

I would think Massey will schedule (IMO) the three best teams in the tournament: Danville Schlarman, Springfield, and Washington; No point duckin’ anybody, you might as well find out where you are as soon as possible; also, probably, Metamora and Rockford East as they have played them in recent years.

The MLK Tournament is defunct.

Legge Sr.-2nd year Varsity, 2nd year starter.
McCarthy Sr.-2nd year Varsity, 2nd year starter.
Sampson Sr.-4th year Varsity, 3rd year starter.
Range Sr.-2nd year Varsity, played major minutes as back-up to Meinert and Mixon last year.

These players must step up with major contributions to avoid a repeat (or worse) of last season; assume control of the team; poise and leadership.
Legge, McCarthy, Range are playing volleyball; eliminates any work Aug. thru Oct.

Hopefully, given the results of this summer, the team recognizes the size of the gap between where they are and where they need to be to succeed vs. the teams on next season’s schedule; the level of commitment necessary .

The mom of one of the current players played ’96-’99.Those teams started a run from ’96-’03 in which Galesburg went to the State Finals seven times in eight years; in the old 2-class system under which, from the Sectional on, they were playing schools who are 4A in today’s watered-down 4-class system. Today’s players would do well to talk to her about the level of commitment she and her teammates made to put together a run like that.

Summer Postscript

Question marks: post defense, post offense, rebounding, outside shooting, execution vs. fc press and half- court trap, court awareness/instincts, senior leadership. The number of returning veterans might lead one to assume that there are facets which could be considered solid/reliable. Results from the summer would not appear to affirm that assumption. 23 years-haven’t seen the team in a state as it is in presently.

Massey postgame after Canton’s 48-33 whippin’ on Dec. 9: “…Not a group that spent a lot of time working on their shots in the offseason, and now we’re paying the price for it.”
Massey postgame following Canton’s 59-35 drubbing in the Macomb Regional: “….The players, they own what they want…you need to declare what you want out of basketball…In the offseason, if you don’t invest the hours, then it’s hard to compete…We’ve got a lot of kids coming back, but being a year older won’t solve our problems.”

Anybody listening? To be determined….
