Galesburg (8-5) 50 Fox Lake Grant (8-5) 25

Gales 15-25-37-50
FoxLk 07-10-17-25

Announcers’ Stats-Same situation as MS game.
Jenkins-14pts., 4 2pt. FGs, 2 3pt. FGs, 4 reb, 4 assists, 4 steals.
Sampson-9 pts., 3 2pt. FGs, 1 3pt. FG, 0-2 FTs, 5 reb, 1 steal.
Legge-2 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 1 reb
McCarthy-7 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 1 3pt. FG, 2-2 FTs, 5 reb, 1 steal, 1 blk.
Livingston-11pts., 4 2pt. FGs, 1 3pt. FG, 9 reb.
Stevenson-3 pts., 1 3pt. FG, 1 reb.
Tucker-4 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 11 reb.
15-35 2pt. FGs,(43%), 6-22 3pt. FGs (27%), 2-4 FTs (50%), Reb-G 36(11) FLG 17(6) TOs-G 8 FLG 16

-Gales came out very high intensity level; knocked FLG off their feet, never recovered; never showed much energy.
-Despite huge size advantage-6”2 Linbo, 5’11” Karpinski, 5’10” Mahinay-Gales-especially 5’7" Livingston, 5’7” Tucker-was tougher, more aggressive, and quicker.
-Linbo caught 2 fouls early, never got untracked; Karpinski the same; good job double-teaming her in post.
-Gales D-good job vs. post entry, weakside help on lob.
-Huge rebounding edge offset mediocre shooting.
-Jenkins matched up with 5’0” Flores with expected results.

*They had better be playing in these two games.

Except Galesburg, all of the teams in this tournament are within about 40 miles of Mattoon. So before Galesburg showed up, it was a nice neighborhood tournament. Galesburg was the outsider, and they didn’t endear themselves to the locals when they won the tournament their first three years. They have won the tournament four times in the five years they have been coming.

This is a weak field. Galesburg had better go through these teams without much trouble. None of these teams have played anywhere near the level of competition that Galesburg has. The bench should be getting more playing time than usual. In previous years, the starters have mysteriously suddenly become foul-prone. During the three days of this tournament, the local ‘Y’ has been said to have had trouble replacing their regular officials.

I couldn’t find out any detailed info about these teams other than rosters.

-Box-and-1 on Jenkins; to say the team reacted poorly would be an understatement; one spurt in 4th qtr.-down 44-34 came back to tie at 44.
-Situation when playing Mattoon over the years reached a new low. Utterly disgusted; Why Galesburg comes here and puts up with it year after year…
-Any honest, accurate narrative would contain a litany of inexplicable actions by the three ‘neutral’ participants; I’m biting my tongue.

Galesburg vs. Mattoon Addendum I

Announcers’ in-game comments (one sequence typical of the entire game-4th qtr. game on the line).”…The officiating is horrible, but that’s not the reason the Streaks are losing the game. This is not a team we should be losing to…Just haven’t gotten into a flow except for that short time when we tied it up…Riley penetrates and gets pushed, no call..and now an offensive foul…She got pushed, and Riley got called for an offensive foul…Unbelievable…This is unbelievable…And now they’re going to call a technical foul on Kelsi Legge…This is absolutely ridiculous…We’ve seen bad officiating here…This has devolved into something…Again, the Streaks have not played well, but this…Ball knocked away by Riley…She’s tackled at half court, no call…Riley got knocked over, and now a jump ball…Riley got taken to the ground at half court, nobody made a call…Riley knocked the ball away at half court, and she got knocked down at mid court, and they didn’t call it.”

Galesburg vs. Mattoon Addendum II

Massey Postgame
Announcer-“…Coach, a tough loss here tonight…They were running that box-and-1…face-guarding her (Riley) all over the floor…couldn’t get into offensive flow early.”
Massey- “Right…They disrupted things…We just didn’t handle it.”
Announcer-“There’s a reason you’re a coach, and neither of (the announcers) are, because we both, obviously, we would have been kicked out of this game. You held your cool better than either one of us could.”
Massey-“In terms of the officiating, there were a couple of them, I didn’t think were really, uh…We had one of the guys last year, and we know he calls everything…unfortunately, we didn’t get much called our way…I told the girls it would be absolutely ridiculous to say we lost the game because of the officials…for whatever reason…we reverted back…last year…things weren’t going well…filled with self-pity…you could just tell…somebody needs to be leaders…we just had too long a time, we were consumed with self-pity…when you do that, you become individuals…we reverted back…that’s not ever going to be acceptable.”

TOs-G 10 Q 14

1st Qtr.
Q m-t-m entire game
G predominately 2-3, m-t-m at times
G jumped out 7-0
Q 5-0 to 7-7
At :42 9-9
G 5-0 to close qtr.-Sampson ‘3’ 12-9, Jenkins drib pen 14-9; good drib pen in qtr.-Jenkins 4pts., Sampson 2pts. 14-9
2nd Qtr.
Q 6-0 run- ‘J’, bd, off. reb 15-14
3:49 G 1st pts. 8-0 run to close qtr.-Jenkins trans off steal 16-15, Sampson ‘3’ 19-15 :44, Sampson bailout ‘3’ at buzzer, not organized holding for last shot.
Q shut down G inside-hc off. no flow; 2 ‘3’s, transition layup in qtr.
3rd Qtr.
Looking for McCarthy at 3pt. line-matched up with Q C Nelson-not following her out
Q 5-0 run ‘3’, ‘J’ 22-20
6:09 G 9-0 run-McCarthy ‘3’ 25-22, McCarthy ‘3’ 28-22 5:01, McCarthy ‘3’ 31-22 4:30

Legge 2 FTs 57-39, Sampson ‘J’ 59-39
59-41; 10-10 FTs in qtr.

G good drib pen entire game-Jenkins, Sampson, Legge
G getting wide-open 3pt. looks all game-no close out; coach’s decision to not follow out, stay down take away inside? Never adjusted.
G good job on glass vs. bigger, stronger Q; quicker to the ball; how Jenkins got inside for 7 rebs, I don’t know.
Slow starts allowed Q to start 2nd, 3rd, 4th qtrs. with runs to close gap; fortunately, able to answer with their own runs.
Everything came up roses-totally opposite track record- 9-20 3pt. FGs (45%), season-30%, 16-20 FTs (80%), season-64%; can’t expect a repeat at Quincy; concerned about Q shutting down G post game.

Thurs. Jan. 10
Galesburg (14-7,4-1) at Rock Island (17-1,5-0)

https://www.galesburg.com/sports/201901 ... isit-rocky

1ST Game- Rock Island 61-35-Gales 2-3 zone; RI 1st half straight halfcourt ‘D’; 2nd half extended-trap, overplaying passing lanes, numerous run-outs; Gales-20 TOs (13 2nd half); 13 pts. 2nd half; several RI players playing in 2nd varsity game have been maturing as the season has progressed.
2nd place State Farm Classic-beat Richwoods 49-44 in semifinals
Brea Beal-33 pts., 16 reb, 4 steals, 4 blks in Monday’s 53-40 win over North Scott.

RI has not shot well from 3pt. line this season. Galesburg has to play zone again.
Expect RI to pressure ball fullcourt, and trap halfcourt, which was Galesburg’s undoing in first game.

Fri. Jan. 11
Galesburg (14-7) at Morton (17-2 )

Last year-Morton 65-46
3rd place State Farm Classic
Split games with Richwoods this year: L-64-61 2OT, W 43-42 (State Farm 3rd-place game).

Balanced scoring:
Tenley Dowell 6’0” G/PG Sr.-2017-18 AP Class 3A First-Team All-State
Maddy Becker 5’5 G Jr.
Lindsey Dullard 6’1’ G/F Jr.
Katie Krupka 6’1” G/F Fr.

Intense pressure on perimeter (Gales-23 TOs last year); deep bench allows constant high-level of intensity; force ‘D’ to guard for extended period; exploit def. breakdown for high-pct. shots.

In both games, very important for Jenkins, Legge, and Sampson to take care of the ball.
