Lewistown (26-1) 43 Galesburg (15-11) 32

Lewis 11-29-38-43
Gales 07-18-25-32

Missed game-prior commitment-caught postgame.
Galesburg didn’t know they were going to play Lewistown until during 3rd qtr. vs BCC; 30 min. break between games. How many other coaches would be willing to do that?

Announcers’ Stats
Jenkins-5 pts., 1 2pt. Fg, 1 3pt FG, 5 reb, 3 assists, 1 blk
Sampson-8 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 2 3pt. FGs, 0-1 FT, 4 reb, 2 assists, 2 steals

Galesburg (15-11,5-2) at Moline (14-12,5-4)
https://www.galesburg.com/sports/201901 ... nt-to-play

1st Game-Galesburg 52-44 2OT
Random:
-Moline started out using smaller Gs on Jenkins-burned with drib pen; small Gs 8 TOs 1st qtr.
-2nd qtr.-5’8” Trice to PG onto Jenkins (factor late in game); Moline pressure-Gales 7 TOs; Moline getting inside, dominating glass.
-3rd qtr.-Trice out 3:32-gassed chasing Jenkins
-4th qtr. Trice back, smaller Gs back on Jenkins, Trice conserve energy for off. end; Gales can’t get off a shot end of qtr.
-1st OT-Gales denied Moline last-second shot.
2nd OT-Moline looking to go to Trice; @3:11 G 45-43 Trice out-looked gassed; hurt Moline off.; 1:02 G 49-44 Trice back; sat over 2 min. as game slipped away; G 7-8 FTs to close out.

General
-Gales took advantage of Moline overplaying def. for several backdoors.
-Gales even on glass 2nd half.
-Good job 2nd half defending inside vs. Pittington, McNamee.
-Couldn’t find a matchup vs. Jenkins-filled stat sheet-14pts., 2 3pt. FGs, 8-10 FTs, 7 reb, 5 assists, 3 steals, 2 blks.

Questions
Moline

-Who will match up vs. Jenkins?
-What def. adjustments to take away Gales backdoor sets?
-Zone to combat above two? Haven’t played much zone throughout season.
-Off. adjustments to get more touches by posts?.
Galesburg
-Overcome history of poor shooting at Wharton Fieldhouse?

-All too familiar performance vs. 1-2-2 fc press (21 TOs) and 1-2-2 hc zone-packed in, giving the ‘3’ (23%).
-Not a good reflection on the comparative strength of the WB 6.
-No further comments.

Galesburg at Lincoln Addendum

Massey postgame:”…This is a very disappointing game…we just had, I think, maybe the 1-2-2 does that to you…We had too many situations…We had kids who…things that they’d done and that we need them to do all
season, they failed to do…We had situations where for whatever the reason was that, you know, we had shooters that didn’t even look at the basket, not taking shots for an entire quarter…We had kids who missed two shots and then they quit shooting…There was one sequence when by the time we got to late 1st quarter, we looked out and there wasn’t anybody on the perimeter who was looking to shoot the ball…It’s a tough thing…We have too many situations where we’ve got kids that really didn’t seem like they wanted the ball…They were kinda fading out of things…They’re (Lincoln) what? 7-19?

“It’s one of those things that’s frustrating for coaches, there’s things where I thought with a senior group, and we’re playing against basically a Fresh/Soph team that I thought, you know, we would at the end of the year, we would have a little more umph to what we wanted to get done, but we didn’t…We’ll have to see, they’ve gotta be…Today when things didn’t go well, we started to kinda not have each others’ backs…Those are things that, hopefully, we’ll correct.”

After 27 games with 4 Sr. starters, this is still an issue?

Mon. Feb. 4
Jacksonville (0-28,0-16) at Galesburg (15-13,5-3)

What is there to say?
With Sterling and Geneseo joining the conference next year, Galesburg will lose four non-conference games. Hopefully, they won’t have to schedule a team like this in an effort to fill out the 31-game schedule.

Thurs. Feb. 7
Galesburg (16-14,5-4) at Quincy (21-8,4-5)

1st Game-Galesburg 59-41
-Quincy-m-t-m entire game; never came out to challenge 3pt. shooters, stayed down to take away inside; never adjusted.
-Galesburg-good drib pen-Sampson, Jenkins, Legge; knocked down 9-20 wide-open 3pt. looks-Quincy never closed out-understandable-Gales 25% for season; good effort on glass-especially off. vs bigger, strong Quincy posts-more aggressive, quicker to the ball.
-Quincy made runs in each qtr., Galesburg answered each time.
-Expect Quincy to do the same thing defensively; effectively shut down Gales post game 1st game; Gales won’t shoot 45% from 3pt. line down there.
-Galesburg must win this game to avoid (1) 2-8 in last 10, (2) 3-game losing streak to finish conference schedule, (3) dropping into a 3rd place tie with Quincy.

Always a pleasant experience going to Quincy. In addition to the 116 mi., 2 hr. drive, great facilities to play in. Girls’ gym; a curtain serves as backdrop behind one basket; in times past, rims have been known to have been bent down in front or askew. I heard they finally upgraded the sound system so that it doesn’t sound like a child’s walkie-talkie.

Back in the 50’s, the CB&Q ran a train down for the game. Great time-play pitch, knock down a couple brews.

Peoria Manual Regional
Feb. 12 7:00pm

Galesburg (16-14) vs. Peoria Notre Dame (14-12)
https://www.galesburg.com/sports/201902 ... al-tuesday

Last year (regular season)-Galesburg 47-29
Random Thoughts
-Will Gales switch m-t-m and 2-3 zone as circumstances dictate?
-Gales had problems recently defending two things ND does well: drib pen (vs. Alleman-Ward 16 pts.) and post play (vs. Moline-McNamee 20pts., 10 rebs).
-Gales must be aware of the backdoor opportunities a spread offense creates; if Gs drop down to help vs. drib pen, easy kick-out for open ‘J’.
-Snyder’s ability to step out and hit the Ft. line ‘J’ creates several problems: (1) If they don’t follow her out-wide-open 15-footer, (2) If they follow her out-hi/lo opportunity, (3) the Ft. area is the hole in the 2-3-opens up kick-out for wing 'J'.
-Gales executes offense much better vs. m-t-m than 2-3 zone; vs. m-t-m-good drib pen, can get backdoor opportunities, off-the-ball screens create open ‘J’s; vs. 2-3 zone-often tentative, not a lot of movement away from the ball, can become stagnant; soft cross-court passes often result in steals and breakaways; 3pt. shooting inconsistent.
-1-2-2 press has given Gales problems all year; Jenkins has to get help with press break.
-Range (5’7”) has done an admirable job defending, rebounding vs. taller posts all year.

Starters (?)-as best as I could determine from roster and PJ Star box scores.
Bridget Taylor 5’6” Jr.
Gabrielle Favorita 5’8” Jr.
Sam Villianotos 5’3” Jr.
Anna Wolter 5’8” Jr.
Lexi Snyder 5’11” Sr.
Bench
Mackenzie Schuler 5’8” Jr.
Lainy Sevier 5’5” Jr.
Fiona Tomlins 6’1” Jr.
Ella Mccombs 5’4” Jr.
Lauren Couri 5’8” Jr.

-Although young, not inexperienced; Jrs. played major roles last year.
-Count on ND to play the same high-intensity, in-your-face defense that characterized coach Langholf’s Canton teams over the years.

Galesburg Team Leaders
Riley Jenkins-9.8pts/gm, 3.9 assists/gm, 1.9 steals/gm.
Daija Range-6.4 rebs/gm.

Galesburg vs. Peoria ND Addendum I

Announcers Postgame
Announcer #1-“…Notre Dame came out, had a really good game plan, the Streaks…when you can’t make a shot sometimes it goes to other areas of the game when it shouldn’t.”
Announcer #2-“ The bigger issue here is that the inability to get shots to fall carried over to the defense…the defense got too lax…when they had that comeback…the defense got better…and then it fell right back apart when they started missing shots again.”
Announcer #1-“You’re going to have off nights offensively, but you should never have an off night defensively.”

Galesburg vs. Peoria ND Addendum II

Massey Postgame
Announcer-“…This game in some ways a microcosm of the season.”
Massey-“Sadly, I have to agree. Unfortunately, early in the year, and then late in the year, you look at most of our scores, offensively we just had trouble getting out of the 30’s.”
Announcer-“…Overall, this (game) not bad…but when the ball stops going in…with this team in particular…lose focus…when not making shots.”
Massey-“Tonight we weren’t very good defensively…we just weren’t…things we had talked about…wanting to get over ball screens, (ND) going baseline…their offense spreads you out and exposes when you’re not totally focused, and what happened was, we weren’t focused well when the ball went away from us.”
Announcer-“You’ve got some good talent coming up…we’ve talked about it before, there’s a difference between potential and what actually happens…it’s all about the work in the off-season, especially individually.”
Massey-“Oh yeah, it is, the spring’s about self-improvement, fall’s about self-improvement…they can do other sports…but the kids on teams that have been good, and the kids that end up on teams that compete for championships…what they’ve gotta do is…basketball can’t be something they do, it’s gotta be a priority…part of my job is to motivate kids to do that in the off-season.”

???-No real, self-respecting competitive athlete needs external prodding for motivation. Their pride, commitment, and self-discipline generate it from within. If 31 losses in two years doesn’t result in embarrassment and a driving determination not to let it happen again, what will?

Final Announcer Stats 2018-’19-Some of the stats for the games when the announcer who kept the individual stats was AWOL may skew the numbers fractionally.

(Team leader)
Riley Jenkins-9.8pts., 3.1 reb, 3.8 assts, 1.8 steals, .6 blks.
Andrea Sampson-9.2pts., 3.1 reb, 1.0 assts, .9 steals, .3 blks.
Kelsi Legge-4.6pts., 2.6 reb, 1.7 assts, 1.2 steals, .3 blks.
Chloe McCarthy-6.1pts., 4.0 reb, .9 assts, 1.2 steals, .6 blks.
Daija Range-5.2pts., 6.5 reb, .5 assts, .9 steals, .3 blks.
47% 2pt. FGs, 29% 3pt. FGs, 65% FTs, 9.3 assts, 7.4 steals, 2.5 blks, Reb-Gales 31(11.7) Opp. 29(10.5),
TOs-Gales 14 Opp. 15

IMO
Co-MVPs-Soph. Riley Jenkins, Sr. Andrea Sampson
Most Improved Player-Riley Jenkins
-Sampson probably led the team in 3pt. FG%-announcers never gave individual shooting pcts. or TOs; She always wanted the ball late in close games; made several high-pressure shots with games on the line throughout the season.
-TOs/gm. improved with Jenkins taking over the PG spot. Jenkins displayed the highest “basketball I.Q.” and the most diversified offensive skills on the team. MVP-Mattoon Holiday Tournament.

Movin’ on down the highway… (paraphrasing the late Jim Croce)
Next year could be Riley Jenkins against the world unless the returning players are willing to prioritize their offseason activities emphasizing basketball-shooting the #1 priority, given the results from the last two years; weight room.
Jenkins is going to have a large bulls-eye on her back next year. The #1 point of emphasis for opponents will be to wear her down-rough her up and harass her all over the court: pressure advancing the ball up court, double team/trap (force the ball out of her hands), face-guarding all over the court (as Mattoon did with good results), alternating players to keep a fresh defender on her.

Two Major Concerns (factors that contribute to other specific question marks)
(1)-Replace four starters. Jenkins is a known quantity. None of the back-ups had any really significant court time vs. quality opponents-all are unknown quantities. Absent unforeseen circumstances, Sr. 2G Stevenson, Sr. Wing Miller, and Jr. F Livingston (a true G) should move into the starting lineup; the fifth starter is a question mark.
(2)-The back-ups will all be players brought up from the Fr./Soph. team (12-12).
Consequently, all of these players-especially Stevenson, Miller (newly-named captains), and Livingston-must make major commitments in the offseason-especially in the fall-if Galesburg is to avoid a repeat of the last two seasons.

Captains must lead by example. They must be the toughest, hardest-working players on the team-including the offseason. When the game starts going south, the other players are looking to them. Jenkins has proven herself in that regard. Stevenson and Miller now have the responsibility to do the same.

http://masseybasketball.blogspot.com/20 ... tment.html
Players bear the responsibility/deserve the credit for building a culture of winning within a program. They also bear responsibility if a program falls into a situation where losing becomes the norm, the bar for expectations is lowered, and standards which were once absolute become relative.

Last summer, the fundamental question posed was, “How deep is the commitment (“all the time?”)? Is anybody willing to do the “unrequired work” during the offseason? The eye test provided the answer.

The question for next year remains the same. Hopefully, this group will respond.

“Don’t need a weather man to know which way the wind blows”.-Robert Allen Zimmerman
