United Township 41 Galesburg 37
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2016120 ... burg-48-35

Announcer's Stats
Kaylah-9 pts., 2 3pt. FGs, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals
Kylie-11 pts., 2 3pt. FGs, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 blocks
Milroy-5 pts., 1 3pt. FG, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks
Junk-0 pts., 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals,
Meinert- 0 pts., 3 rebounds, 2 blocks
Lingafelter-10 pts., 2 3pt. FGs, 4 rebounds, 2 steals
Sampson-2 pts., 5 rebounds, 2 assists,

6-23 2pt. FGs, 7-26 3 pt. FGs Rebounds-Gales 33(13 off.) UT 38(14 off.) TOs- Gales 23 UT 23

-Lack of focus, poise
-Poor execution vs. 1-2-2 zone- not attacking seams, not flashing to middle, UT started overplaying passes to wings, creating TOs.
-Poor job protecting ball.
-Blow half-dozen point blank layups.
-Half court defense- little pressure on perimeter.
-Press burned several times; crucial: 37-35 at :18, pass over zone to O'Brien for layup, 39-35; 39-37 at :18, long pass to O'Brien, 1 of 2 FTs, 40-37; 1 FT at :03, 41-37.
-As I feared, Meinert had a tough game-fouled out, scoreless.
-I didn't think they would shoot as well on the road, but not this bad.
-Looks like Massey is only going to play 7 players(Huppenbauer ?)

Massey Post-game
Defensively-UT got ball inside too much; not putting enough pressure on perimeter; UT quicker in post.
Offensively- bad choices, decision-making with ball not good.
"Can't sugar coat it. This was a team we shouldn't lose to, and we did."
"In terms of this, there's some things we've got to correct, and we've got to get going in terms of our approach and everything we do."

Galesburg at Rock Island Alleman Preview
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2016112 ... d-pioneers

So, the Streaks make the trek up to the "friendly confines" of Don Morris Gym. As Streaks76 can attest, this is never a pleasant experience. Bad lighting; Obnoxious fans; Alleman always plays a level above up there. If McCracken is the same type of coach as Hatch, they will be improved in their man-to-man and overall physical toughness; Games up there can turn into hand-to-hand combat.

The players need to have a memory lapse, and forget about the first game; Come out with more focus and intensity than they did against Metamora. You can't judge Alleman by their record. Galesburg has taken teams up there who appeared superior, and had an unhappy bus ride home.

First Game
Kaylah-9 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 5 FTs, 2 rebounds, 8 assists, 6 steals, 1 block
Kylie-5 pts., 2 2 pt. FGs, 1 FT, 6 rebounds, 1 assist
Milroy-19 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 5 3pt. FGs, 5 rebounds, 2 assists

This is way down the line, but I want to comment on it now. Just posted on Team Page. http://www.galesburggirlsbasketball.org

MLK Tournament
Peoria Central replaces Quincy ND on Galesburg's schedule. Good upgrade. ND is having problems; lost 5 SR. starters, legendary coach Eric Orne leaves. However, replacing Normal U-High with Bloomington is a downgrade.

The Streaks have tamed the Pioneers as of late by winning the last 7 or 8 matchups. However, there are no gimme road games in this conference for this team (including Alleman and Quincy). With that being said, I still expect a sound victory.

Lingafelter-2 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 4 rebounds, 1 steal
Sampson-10 pts., 3 3pt. FGs, 1 FT, 2 rebounds

The R-M article covered most everything I was going to comment on(shock), a couple exceptions-TOs Gales 13(10 in 1st half) not 9; Kaylah and Kylie good job getting inside off dribble.

Next: Tues. vs. Lincoln-I've been trying to find info on them, but can't find anything so far. Streaks76? Anybody?

Lincoln was a Supersectional team last year if my memory serves me correct as I was projecting who Galesburg could have played had we made it to State last year. They have a really good junior guard that is tough to cover. Not sure how much they lost to graduation. Will be a tough game I imagine.

1-5 now, lost to Springfield by 30. They must have graduated nearly ALL their talent pool.

Lincoln at Thiel Tuesday
http://www.galesburggirlsbasketball.org/

With that 1-5 record, they'd better not be a great test for Galesburg.

Lincoln 48 Galesburg 35
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2016120 ... burg-48-35

Announcer's Stats- Very sketchy. They didn't want to spend any more time rehashing the game than absolutely necessary.
Kaylah-8pts., 2 3pt. FGs, 2-3 FTs
Kylie-4 pts., 1 2pt. FGs, 2-2 FTs.
Milroy-12 pts., 4 3pt. FGs.
Sampson-11 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 3 3pt. FGs.

2-10 2pt. FGs, 9-28 3 pt. FGs, 4-5 FTs Rebounds- Gales 22(11) Lincoln 28(14) TOs- Gales 20 Lincoln 15.

First, some levity. Headline "Lincoln Derails Streaks". The "Silver Streak" was the name given to the California Zephyr that went through Galesburg in the '20s and '30s. Adopted as school nickname. Clever.

The game itself was far from humorous.

-Intimidated, tentative, at times panicked.
-Lincoln took it to Galesburg from the start. Much more intensity and energy.
-Lincoln's defense dominated- 1-2-2 fc press, into 1/2 court trap, drop back into 1-2-2 zone. Lincoln is by far the best defensive team Galesburg has seen.
-Although only a 3pt.-game at halftime, it was apparent that Lincoln had control. Jumped out 6-0, led 14-7 when Froebe sat down with 2 fouls late 2nd qtr., helping Galesburg close out to 18-15 at half.
-You knew game was over when the Galesburg players walked(not ran, WALKED) back onto floor after halftime with totally negative body language and dead facial expressions.
-Lincoln- 17-9 3rd qtr. to put game away.
-As noted above, Galesburg got only 10 shots inside the 2 pt. line- 2 FGs- pullup jumper by Sampson and layup by Kylie. Rest were short-armed and not under control, as if they were worried about getting their shot blocked. They only shot 5 FTs.
-Massey told the announcer in post-game that they just simply must find some way to get points inside.
-How was it that Lincoln came in at 1-5, Galesburg came in at 6-1, and Lincoln laid that whippin' on 'em? As I've stated previously, very poor level of competition in the Thanksgiving tournament.

Galesburg vs. Moline and at Canton Preview

Register-Mail has not posted the preview article. Will check later.

Moline- I'm concerned about this game. Moline's strengths-size and strength inside, and 1-2-2 zone (as evidenced by the UT and Lincoln games) directly attack Galesburg's weaknesses. If the wings in the zone extend too far out, Kaylah and Kylie will beat them off the dribble and get into the gaps. If I'm Moline, I'm going to contract enough to narrow the gaps and say, "OK, prove that you can make enough 3pt. shots to beat us.".

Canton
W Spoon River 65-19
W Farmington 53-30
W Lewistown 58-28
W Astoria/VIT 45-39
W Macomb 58-47
W Washington 39-30
W Peoria Christian 44-40

Not an extremely stellar group of opponents.
Lost 4 starters, including All-Conference Cloe Churchill-88% of offense.

Galesburg 62 Moline 47
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2016120 ... st-maroons

Announcer's Stats

Kaylah-26 pts., 6 2pt. FGs, 3 3pt. FGs, 5 FTs, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, 1 block
Kylie-5 pts., 5 FTs, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks
Milroy-12 pts., 4 3pt. FGs, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 block
Junk-2 pts., 2 FTs, 2 rebounds
Meinert-6 pts., 2 2 pt. FGs, 2 FTs, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks
Lingafelter-2 pts., 1 2 pt. FG, 2 rebounds, 1 assist
Sampson-9 pts., 1 2 pt. FG, 2 3 pt. FGs, 1 FT, 2 rebounds, 2 assists

10-20 2 pt. FGs, 9-22 3 pt. FGs, 15-23 FTs, Rebounds- Gales 25(9) Moline 26(6), TOs- Gales 12 Moline 12

-After a slow start, Galesburg got into an offensive flow in 2nd Qtr.
-Moline coach tried every defense you could find in the coach's manual-man-to-man, 1-2-2, 2-3, 1-2-2 fc press, even, as a last resort, box-and-one and triangle-and-two.
-Galesburg's good 3pt. shooting forced Moline to expand zone, allowing Kaylah and Kylie to get into the lane off the dribble.
-Overall, Kylie, Junk, and Meinert did a good job defensively inside; Billups was pretty much a non-factor. Crompton hurt them off the dribble with 8 1st-half pts.- held to 4 in 2nd half.
-Galesburg not only had great ball movement vs. zone, but also moving without the ball, creating numerous open shots.

Next- Saturday at Canton. Post-game Massey said Canton has built an impressive program, likes to get out and run and press, has an outstanding Soph. G, and it will be a very tough game.

-Canton- showed 1-2-1-1, but if they couldn't get the first trap, dropped back, and pressured ball 1-on-1.

-Canton using too much time getting into set; Gales steal.
:27-Canton foul;1 of 2 FTs; 46-37.
-Canton -long '3'; 46-40.
:16-Canton foul; 2 FTs; 48-40.
:12- Canton 3 pt. play; 48-43.
:05-Canton foul; 1of 2 FTs; 49-43.

Galesburg 51 Quincy 35
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2016121 ... incy-51-35

Announcer's Stats
Kaylah-16 pts., 5 2pt. FGs, 6-11 FTs, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals
Kylie-8 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 2 3pt. FGs, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block
Milroy-13 pts., 3 3pt. FGs, 4-4 FTs, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal
Junk-6 pts., 1 2 pt. FG, 1 3 pt. FG, 1-2 FTs, 3 rebounds, 1 steal
Meinert- 2 pts., 1 2 pt. FG, 6 rebounds, 1 assist
Lingafelter-4 pts., 2 2 pt. FGs, 1 rebound
Sampson- 0-2 FTs, 3 rebounds
Boyd-2 pts., 1 2 pt. FG

11-25 2 pt. FGs, 6-15 3 pt. FGs, 11-19 FTs, Rebounds- Gales 29(12) Quincy 24(4), TOs- Gales 7 Quincy 16

The R-M has done a good job lately detailing game; just a couple points.
-Kaylah and Milroy both played approx. 31 mins..
-Kaylah and Humphrey matched up. Kaylah beat her off the dribble several times to get inside.
-Kaylah- 7 1st half points; but uncharacteristically only made 1 of 1st 4 FTs.
-Quincy ran a deliberate 1-4 set; Humphrey mostly directing other players rather than attempting to do too much 1-on-1; when she did try to create her own shot off dribble, Kaylah bottled her up consistently.
-Humphrey picked up 3rd foul mid 2nd qtr..
-At 27-20, Galesburg was holding for last shot; bad turnover at midcourt led to layup for 25-20 at half.
-Humphrey started 3rd qtr. on bench; came in at 4:53; switched her off Kaylah to Kylie.
-Quincy first switched a 5'9" player onto Kaylah, who did a good job. When she came out, put a smaller G on her; Kaylah got inside on her consistently, posting her up a couple times.
-Although Galesburg only had 7 TOs, it seemed like more; most of them were in open court off soft cross-court passes; the Quincy defender at mid-court laid back off looking for the cross-court pass, and jumped the passing lane leading to layups.

Streaks76-your comments on these games, please. You're much more analytical than I.

Next- Thursday at Peoria Notre Dame. TOUGH TEST.

Saw the Canton game. Galesburg plays hard and made the plays that players in good programs make in beating an above average Canton team. Galesburg wasn't the dominant machine I expected. Solid would be more apt.

While not considered a "down" year, this team isn't at the level of the '15 and '16 teams who were dominant; losing last year's leading scorer and rebounder (Florine), outstanding 3 pt. shooter (Daniels), and assists leader and best defensive player (Gully), this team has acquitted itself well considering it's lack of size and depth. "Solid " would be accurate.

The starters get the ink, which is understandable. I'd like to talk about someone who comes in off the bench-Emily Meinert 5'11" Jr. F. She consistently comes in and does her job-solid defender and rebounder. At times she tries too hard and gets ahead of herself a bit, but no one on this team works harder or has more heart than Emmy. She gives all she has every second she's on the court. I know she will be a valuable starter next year.

Re: Notre Dame

A reminisence, bear with me. If I recall, the last time Galesburg played in this gym was 2001. I may be wrong, but I do remember this game. I remember bleachers on one side, scorer's table and team benches on the other; balconies at each end(?). The bleachers were divided into two sections; separated by a railing or something. Notre Dame fans in the section nearest the entrance, Galesburg fans in the far section. I usually sat in the opponent's section- aggravate their fans.

Anyway, there was a guy in the Notre Dame section wearing tan Haggar slacks, a light blue Izod knit shirt, and cordovan penny loafers-some Yuppie type. So, before the game, he goes down to the sidelines and has a conversation with the zebras. Probably something like how was their day and how's the family. He did the same thing before the 3rd qtr..Most likely inquiring if the locker room facilities were satisfactory. Make a long story short: some strange things happened in that game; still, Galesburg won. I hope that guy isn't still around.

P.S.- One week prior, Moline had come in. The Moline fans were incensed by the officiating. One lady was escorted out of the building. From the bleachers, I inquired of these officials if they had also worked the Moline game. Galesburg fans were amused. Mr. GQ was not.

Moline-PND game: the "Twins" officiated that game. If you saw many girls game in the Peoria area at that time, you were familiar with them. The Moline woman escorted out of that game was the Grandmother of one of the Maroon players. We did have one of the Twins at our game the next week. We spread the word to "Be careful", mainly to Jim (last name omitted on purpose) because he could be our most opinionated fan. We all made it out of there unscathed, as I remember.........

Ah, memories..........
Look back but don't stare.

R-M article covered most everything; I have a couple comments

Alexander Elger ND coach; daughter Olivia played four years at Richwoods.
Schuler out-concussion protocol-absence hurt ND's offensive continuity and vs. Galesburg's press.

1ST Qtr.
-Very sluggish start; ND very deliberate; first possession lasted over a minute
-ND 2-3 zone
-Sampson's 3pter first FG at under 5 minutes
-Galesburg press to try to speed up pace
-Osmulski 8 pts.-2 3pt. FGs
2ND Qtr
O'Brien 2nd foul mid-way
-Galesburg down 18-12, back to 22-19 at half
Half-time: Kaylah 12 pts., Osmulski 8 pts., ND 4-6 3pt. FGs, ND controlled boards- Gales 9(3) ND 16(7)
3RD Qtr.
-Obrien 3rd foul early
-27-24 ND
-27-27 on Milroy 3pter; started Galesburg 7-0 run to 31-27
-O'Brien 4th foul at :38
-35-29 at qtr.
-Kaylah 12 pts.
4TH Qtr.
-ND closed to 35-33
-38-33 on Milroy 3pter at 6:40
-Press forcing ND guards into fast pace, not under control
-41-33 on Milroy 3pter at 5:07
-4:16-ND in bonus(6-6 in qtr.)
-46-39 on Milroy 3pter at 2:07
-46-41 Galesburg slowed down offensively
-48-41 at 1:00; pulled off press
-53-44 final
-Milroy 11 pts. 3 3pters in qtr.
-Galesburg even on boards in 2nd half- Gales 14(8) ND 15(7)

Massey Postgame-Junk, Kylie, Meinert did good job inside against size mismatches; 2nd half, able to get isolations for Kaylah and Kylie; against zone, able to get ball to high-post area, create good looks on perimeter.

Chryslyn Carr- Jr. G; 2nd leading scorer; avg. 23.5 ppg at Davenport West last year; 2nd Team All-State.
