Quincy 36 Galesburg 32
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2018010 ... burg-36-32
Gales 06-17-25-32
Qncy 13-25-30-36

Announcer’s Stats
Legge-4pts., 1 3pt. FG, 1-2 FTs, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 block
McCarthy-5 reb, 2 assists, 1 steal
Sampson-3 pts., 1 3pt. FG, 5 reb, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 block
Meinert-12 pts., 5 2pt. FGs, 2-6 FTs, 14 reb, 1 assist, 2 steals
Mixon-2 pts., 2-5 FTs, 16 reb, 1 assist, 2 steals, 3 blocks
Campbell-4 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 1 reb, 1 steal
Lingafelter-7 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 1-3 FTs, 2 reb, 2 steals
9-23 2pt. FGs, 3-28 3pt. FGs, Reb- Gales 45(21), Quincy 29(11), TOs-Gales 29 Quincy 24

-Both teams were terrible. Quincy just a little less terrible.
-Galesburg came out zero intensity.
-Galesburg stayed close only because Quincy’s shooting and ballhandling were as bad as Galesburg.
-The details don’t merit mentioning.

Massey Postgame-…”…Disappointing…At the beginning of the game, they came out…played with much more intensity than we did…to be honest, we were a little casual in practice this week…they were the aggressors…winnable game…If we had played harder…this was one of those games…we were ‘poor, poor, me’ in terms of things…we didn’t hustle back on defense the way we need to…those are things that are correctable…lethargic performance…”

There is simply no justification for this cr#p. Effort should NEVER be a factor. “Correctable”? This issue has been brought up before-also by the announcers. At some point, it goes beyond the players.

“When a player gives you less than what he has to give, he is, first, telling you what he thinks of you, and second, what he thinks of himself.” Pete Carill, Hall of Fame head coach Princeton University Basketball, 1954-2011.

Legge-13 pts., 1 2pt. Fg, 3 3pt. FGs, 2-2 FTs, 4 reb,2 assists
McCarthy-4 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 2-2 FTs, 1 reb, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 block

10-21 2pt. FGs, 8-24 3pt. FGs, 7-11 FTs, Reb-Gales 36(18) Dun 20(11), TOs-Gales 24 Dun 6

Article gave good narrative.
Galesburg TOs came in clusters, allowing several Dunlap runs; particularly bad because most came off crosscourt/skip passes leading to Dunlap breakaway layups.
Dunlap 2-3 zone took away Galesburg in post.
Britter never got untracked; Mixon very physical with her.

1ST Qtr.
Dun came out m-t-m; Gales getting inside; Britter quick foul helping on penetration; D went 2-3 zone 6:00 mark , stayed in it rest of game.
-Britter 2nd foul @3:08 tied 6-6, sat out rest of half
-10-9
2ND Qtr.
-Gales out to 16-10; D run to go up 23-22 fueled by several Gales TOs.
-Gales 6-0 run ‘3’s- Legge, Sampson.

3RD Qtr.

-4:46 D up 44-43
-Legge ‘T’, 2 TOs D up 48-43
-Gales takes fouls late, D closes out game at FT line.

Massey Postgame-…”Skip passes, they’re sitting back, jumping lanes…this is a game we could have had…proud of effort…played pretty well…Guards Kelsi and Andrea…nice job as far as shots…1st half answered Dunlap runs…But again, we just aren’t going to win games at this level turning the ball over 20 or more times…didn’t get the ball into the post as well as we should have…in particular into high post and dumping it down low…playing better…stretch in 2nd half…didn’t give ourselves shots…turned the ball over.”

Rock Island (12-6, 5-0) at Galesburg (9-10, 2-3)
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2018011 ... t-thursday

1ST Game-Rock Island 58-34; Massey tried 2-3 zone to try to cut down dribble penetration and off. reb.- RI 16 off. reb; RI didn’t press, very little ½ court trap mostly straight m-t-m; RI on 1-5 skid- 4 losses in Title IX Tourney in DC, 53-40 to Pleasant Valley Saturday. Hoover probably wants a big win to boost team’s confidence; wouldn’t be surprised if RI pulls out all the stops early.
Hoover said he has been unhappy with the players’ level of energy and intensity last few games. RI has struggled vs. zone- poor 3pt. shooting.

Still the Brea Beal/Chryslyn Carr show; Hoover still looking for production from support players.

Galesburg (11-11, 2-4) at United Township (9-10, 2-4)
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2018011 ... ack-at-500

1ST Game- Galesburg 62 UT 41; UT coach tried just about every defense in the book; kept UT C Ryleigh O'Brien under control most of the game; starting F 5’11” Brandi LaFountaine- first game of season after IHSA Swimming Finals- will be more of a factor this time; Fr. PG Isabella Sims has become an important contributor. This game will have little resemblance to first one.

Starters
Calie Walker 5’4” G Sr.
Isabella Sims 5’5” PG Fr.
Davianna Morgan 5’6” G Jr.
Ryleigh O’Brien 6’0” C Sr.

United Township 38 Galesburg 24
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2018011 ... eaks-38-24

Gales 02-15-17-24
UTwn 07-20-31-38

Announcer’s Stats
Legge-1 reb, 1 reb, 1 assist, 3 blocks
McCarthy-2 reb, 2 assists, 2 blocks
Sampson-2 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 7 reb, 1 assist
Meinert-6 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 2-2 FTs 10 reb, 2 steals
Mixon-6 pts., 8 reb, 1 steal
Range-1 reb, 1 steal
Lingalfelter-3 pts., 1 3pt. FG, 1 reb
Campbell-2 assists
Jenkins-7pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 1 3pt. FG, 1 assist
Tucker-0-1 FT, 3 reb
8-19 2pt. FGs, 2-16 3 pt. FGs, 2-3 FTs, Reb- Gales 36 (11) UT 31 (14), TOs- Gales 27 UT 10

UT is a mediocre team.

No toughness, no court awareness, no energy.
24 pts., 27 TOs
3 starting Gs- 1-7 2pt. FGs, 0-11 3 pt. FGs
Fr. Riley Jenkins comes off the bench after playing the entire So. game, and leads team with 7 pts. (2-3 2pt. FGs, 1-2 3pt. FGs) in limited minutes.
Certain people should be ashamed of themselves.
Massey Postgame:
…”Disappointment…They came out with so much energy…We didn’t, and we didn’t respond to it…I thought…We’ve done it before…Didn’t make shots…filled with self-pity…Didn’t play as hard…Got back…5 at halftime…we’re there…came out, first 4 minutes I don’t think we scored…lifeless…very disappointed…with this game, fighting to stay out of the cellar.”

Actually, Gales first points came at the 2:30 mark 3rd qtr.

“…We’ve done it before…didn’t make shots…filled with self-pity…Didn’t play as hard.” You bet they’ve done it before-multiple times. This situation is ridiculous. The question is…why is it being tolerated? My first question would be, “Doesn’t it bother you for people to see you reacting this way?” Whatever approach is being used, it isn’t working. The message needs to change. What’s the term for doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results?

Galesburg 60 Stillman Valley 47
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2018012 ... technicals

Still 14-31-40-47
Gale 23-37-52-60

Announcer's Stats
Legge-1 reb, 3 asssits, 1 steal, 2 blocks
McCarthy-1 reb, 1 assist, 2 steals
Sampson-13 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 3 3pt. FGs, 4 reb, 1 assist
Meinert-4 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 6 reb
Mixon-16 pts., 8 2pt. FGs, 10 reb, 3 assists, 2 steals
Range-6 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 2-6 FTs, 8 reb, 2 steals
Lingafelter-13 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 3 3pt. FGs, 5 reb, 1 assist, 1 steal
Campbell-6 pts., 2 3pt. FGs, 2 reb
Jenkins-2 pts., 1 2pt. FG
17-39 2pt. FGs, 8-19 3pt. FGs, 2-6 FTs, Reb-Gales 39 (19) Still 29 (14), TOs-Gales19 Still 25

I'm not going to try to give a narrative. At times it was like Alice in Wonderland ("curiouser and curiouser").
Random Thoughts
-SV's 2-3 zone stymied Gales hi/lo and post-up game with immediate double-teams; resulting in either a shot under heavy pressure or a kick back to the perimeter. I can remember only a couple times when Gales scored on post up before double got there; most of Gales inside pts. came from putbacks from off. reb..
-Gales as usual got a lot of open looks from 3pt. line; uncharacteristically, shot 8-19.
-For the first time in recent memory, the bench made a huge contribution; collectively-27 pts., 15 rebs.; they were the difference in the game.
-I lost track of Gales total PFs; SV was in dbl.-bonus in both halves; SV whistled for 7 PFs for the game.
-SV shot as many "T" FTs as Gales team total (6).
-Although no official stats exist, three player "Ts" in one game has to be a record; In 22 yrs., I can remember seeing only 2 player "Ts" before this season.
-Season total 5 player "Ts" with 4 games remaining.
Massey-"I think the technicals were the result of our frustration over how the game was being called on both ends of the floor." You could call that an understatement.

Rock Island (18-7, 9-0) at Galesburg (14-13, 3-4)
Today-Re-scheduled from Jan. 11

1ST Game- RI 48-34; No press or half-court trap, just straight m-t-m; Massey went to 2-3 zone to try to limit RI off. reb. and dribble penetration; limited success-RI 16 off. reb.

Through RI’s 1-7 stretch, Hoover said the team wasn’t playing with intensity and focus; wasn’t getting anything out of supporting players; Lauren Hall and Sophie Thomer have been contributing lately. In RI’s 95-64 bludgeoning of Moline, Hoover left his starters in deep into the 4th qtr.; The Moline players made the mistake of spouting off to the media during the week; looks like Hoover was out to prove a point.

Hoover rotates 9-10 players, so the designation of “starter” doesn’t mean a lot.

Starters?
Breanna Beal 6’1” G/F Jr.
Sophia Thomer 5’3” G Sr.
Chryslyn Carr 5’5 G Sr.
Lauren Hall 5’9” F Sr.
Anne Awour 6’5” C So.

Major Minutes
Delaney Anderson 5’10” F Sr.
Jamesha Walls 5’8” F Sr.
Also a couple Sophs. Whose names escape me.

Rock Island today, Moline on Thursday. This is not going to be a pleasant four days.

Moline (17-10, 8-2) 48 Galesburg (14-15, 3-6) 41
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2018020 ... ff-streaks

Moline 13-22-36-48
Galesb 04-16-26-41

Announcers Stats
Legge-2 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 0-1 FT, 1 reb, 2 assists
McCarthy-2 reb, 1 assist
Sampson-16 pts., 3 2pt. FGs, 3 3pt. FGs, 1-2 FTs, 3 reb, 1 assist, 2 steals
Meinert-7 pts., 3 2pt. FGs, 1-1 FT, 3 reb, 1 steal, 3 blocks
Mixon-8 pts., 4 reb, 1 assist
Range-4 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 2-2 FTs, 3 reb, a assist
Lingafelter-1 pt. 1-2 FTs, 5 reb, 1 assist, 3 steals
Campbell-3 pts., 1 3pt. FG, 1 assist
12-26 2pt. FGs, 4-25 3pt. FGs, 5-8 FTs, Reb-Gales 30 (17) Moline 38 (18), TOs-Gales 10 Moline 15

R-M covered everything well.
Couple comments.
-1st qtr-Moline up 6-4; Mixon whistled for PF; ‘T’d up (5th player ‘T’ of season) after slamming ball to floor which bounced up and hit the basket support; Moline hit 2-3 FTs-up 9-6; fueling overall 9-0 run. 13-4.
-3rd qtr.-Sampson hit back-to-back ‘3’s to get Gales to 24-22; next 3 Gales possessions, 3pt. shots by people who are shooting under 24% from 3pt. line; Moline goes on 7-0 run-31-22.
-4th qtr.-3:34, Moline up 44-38; at that point, wrong people taking 3pt. shots-coming up empty; 2 Moline TOs helped Gales stay close.
-I don’t care how open a player is, if they’re shooting 20%-25% they have no business shooting instead of their leading 3pt. shooter-Sampson- late in a close game; it’s basically the same as a TO.

Monday, Feb. 5
Galesburg (14-15) at Jacksonville (1-24)

I would guess this a situation of last resort to fill out the schedule to the allowed 31 games. The WB6 plays Conference games on Thursday, so Massey has always tried to schedule Sat. afternoon games. That has apparently become more difficult as they played a Tues. game at Lincoln and a Mon. game vs. Dunlap, as well as this game. You can be sure Massey would never have scheduled a game with a team in this condition if there were any other options available. He has always been willing to play anybody, anytime, anywhere.

Galesburg at Jacksonville Cancelled

Just as well. Playing this game would have served no real purpose. Although, a win would have given them a chance to finish above .500. At 14-15, with Quincy to finish the season, and Canton in the Macomb Regional, there's not much chance of that now.

1ST Game-Quincy 36-32; Both teams were terrible, Quincy just not quite as terrible as Galesburg; Galesburg came out-not ready to play; new Quincy coach has those players playing fanatically intense defense; jacked up Galesburg right from the tip, 13-1; Galesburg came back to get close, couldn’t get over the hump.

Macomb Regional
Galesburg vs. Canton
Wed. Feb. 14
http://www.galesburg.com/sports/2018021 ... r-regional

Dec. 9-Canton 48-33; Canton runs a controlled, deliberate offense forcing defense to guard for extended period; don't look for many outside shots; weave, high screens; Gales gave up a large number of layups getting lost on switches; 2nd half Canton rarely looked for anything but layups; 3rd qtr-17 pts.- 8 layups, 1 FT off foul on layup attempt. Defensive pressure didn't allow Gales into much offensive flow.

If two areas significantly improve, Gales could keep it close; 1st game- 1-17 3pt. FGs on home court- 24% for the season, don't expect that to improve much on unfamiliar court; 24 TOs-would have to cut those down to under 15, avg. 19 TOs/gm for the season.

I really don't see this game significantly different from the first one.

Cantn 09-20-36-59

Announcers Stats
Legge-1reb, 1 block
McCarthy-1 steal
Sampson-7 pts., 2 2pt. FGs, 1 3pt. FG, 2 reb, 4 assists, 2 steals
Meinert-14 pts., 5 2pt. FGs, 4-4 FTs, 6 reb, 1 steal 1 block
Mixon-6 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 4-5 FTs, 14 reb, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 blocks
Range-6 reb
Lingafelter-3 pts., 1 3pt. FG, 1 reb, 2 assists, 2 steals
Jenkins-5 pts., 1 2pt. FG, 1 3pt. FG, 1 reb, 3 assists
9-26 2pt. FGs, 3-11 3pt. FGs, 8-9 FTs, Reb-Gales 34 (10) Canton 25 (10), TOs-Gales 31 Canton 11

-Same old story- 3rd qtr.-@5:10 Gales up 23-22; 37-12 rest of game.
-Scouting Gales, coaches see: Put enough pressure on Gales long enough, they’ll crack; once they crack, they never recover.
-Call it loss of composure, lack of toughness, panic, or, announcer: “Imploded.”.
-Moan about loose whistle rather than fighting through it.
-2 ‘T’s; 7 for the season.

Postgame
Announcer: “…There’s a lot of work to be done…Everybody has work to do”.
Massey: “…The players, they own what they want…As a coach what you’ve got to try and talk to them, ‘I don’t want to say to you, ‘This what you need to do as far as amount of time, but you need to decide what you want out of basketball…and once we understand what they want from it, then we’ve got to talk to them about…then we can talk to them about what they’ve got to put into it in terms of things…But if you, in the offseason, if you don’t invest hours in it, then it’s hard to compete at the level…Our schedule is all set for next year, and we’re going to have a tougher schedule than we did this year…and, so, that’s the thing…We’ve got a lot of kids coming back, but being a year older won’t solve our problems.”

I talked about these two areas of concern during the summer, preseason, and throughout the season. Neither showed improvement over 31 games.

This was a bad season. To call it mediocre would be kind. They’re losing Meinert and Mixon, whose defense and rebounding provided the foundation for the team. Their dominant rebounding very often made the difference in off-setting very poor shooting and excessive TOs.

One would hope that what they went through this season provided the three returning starting guards with a dose of reality, and a re-evaluation of the level of commitment required not to allow it to happen again next year. They are going to be counted upon to assume very important leadership roles. They are going to have to carry that team on their backs. There is a decision to be made regarding priorities.

It’s most likely too much to expect the players moving up from the Soph. team to have the same mindset. The bench is bare. At least two, maybe three, first-year players are going to be counted upon to make significant contributions. I would not expect any of them to fully understand what a huge jump it is from Soph. level to Varsity. The coaches can talk until they’re blue in the face about how much harder they have to work. But for most young players, it won’t really penetrate until they’re thrown out there, and they get their butts kicked a few times. That’s when you find out who’s willing to make the necessary commitment, and who isn’t.

The world is full of average people. Stand above the crowd. Choose an endeavor. Commit yourself to the single-mindedness to make the sacrifices necessary to excel at it.

“Commitment separates those who live their dream from those who live their lives regretting the opportunities they have squandered.”-Bill Russell-Boston Celtics (1957-’69); Hall of Fame; 11 Championships in 13-year career; 6-time NBA MVP.
