Canada 0:0 Honduras

Costa Rica and Canada are through from Group A to the quarterfinals. Costa Rica will face the Group B runner-up in Philadelphia on Wednesday. Canada will face the Group C runner-up in Glendale, AZ on Thursday.

Honduras probably is through as well though they have to await the results of matches involving Martinique (vs. Panama) and El Salvador (vs. Jamaica) among teams currently in 3rd place in their respective groups.

U.S. up 1:0 at half on Nicaragua. Joe Corona with the goal in the 36th minute.

Based on Panama's victory earlier, the U.S. needs to win by at least a 3:0 score to win Group B and avoid Costa Rica in the quarterfinals.

Also reports coming out of the 6 players the U.S. will bring in for the knockout round. They will call up Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Darlington Nagbe, Tim Howard, Jesse Gonzalez, and Clint Dempsey.

Matt Miazga with the header in the 88th minute after a red card for Nicaragua.

If the U.S. can hold on, they'll get the result they need to win the group.

USA 3:0 Nicaragua

Better performance tonight albeit against a far inferior opponent. Gonna be interesting to see how they perform in the knockout stage with the players that are gonna be called up.

The U.S. will face either Honduras or El Salvador on Wednesday night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Match will air at 8:00 PM CT on FS1.

I still thought it was a lackluster performance. The 2 missed penalties should never happen, especially since it's something Arena works on in every practice

They did what they needed to do regardless, in all likelihood they'll play either El Salvador or Jamaica, whichever may be a direct loser to the other tonight. If they draw, then it will be El Salvador.

And then if they advance, they'll get Costa Rica/Panama winner in the semis.

The U.S. did call up the 6 players mentioned in the post I made yesterday. The 6 players that are leaving include Brad Guzan, Sean Johnson, Alejandro Bedoya, Cristian Roldan, Kelyn Rowe, and Dom Dwyer.

Unless Mexico craps the bed against Curacao, the US will face El Salvador. If Mexico does crap the bed, the US will face Mexico.

Squirrel, is there any reason that CONCACAF seems to always have Mexico's matches in these tournaments played in or near the southwest part of the U.S.?

I get that in part it may be that they could probably draw a bigger crowd if the matches are held there but would it really hurt attendance that much if they were held in other parts of the U.S.?

I don't think there's anything to this, honestly. Each group this year had 1 northern site and 2 southern sites. In 2015, Mexico played in Chicago and Charlotte (along with Glendale) for the group stage, and in 2013 Denver and Seattle (as well as Pasadena).

You might be right in that the sites this year were selected to boost ticket sales not only among Mexican immigrants, but other Central American nationalities, given that 9 or 10 of the 16 selected sites were geographically southwest, depending on whether or not you counted Denver. But MLS market viability also played a major role in site selection this year, with Arizona, San Antonio and Nasvhille chosen for that reason.

In previous years, the Gold Cup has had much different geographic layouts, but with poorer attendance. So ticket sales was probably a factor this year.

The Gold Cup adopted the end game rules used by last summer's Centenario, namely that knockout stage matches that are level after 90' will go straight to penalties, with the exception of the Final, which will play the additional 30 minutes with a 4th available substitution.

Just to add on, there will also be no third-place playoff in this tournament.

El Salvador should have about 9 men on the field with the shenanigans they have gotten away with.
