Ongoing 2019-20 Premier League Thread

Post by Bluejaygrad03 » Wed Aug 07, 2019 10:31 pm

Sorry squirrel, couldn't wait.

Any predictions on who finishes top 4 this season? Bottom 3? Do Norwich City, Sheffield United, and Aston Villa stay up for another season or do they all get relegated back down to the EFL Championship?

Everton and Crystal Palace play to a 0:0 draw. Both sides had quality chances throughout the match but neither one could put one past the goalkeepers. The wind played quite a factor throughout the match as well as it was gusting strongly enough to be heard through the commentators' mics. This is the 2nd straight season that Everton have opened the season with a draw.

The Toffees return to action next Saturday with their Goodison opener vs. Watford.

Rather inauspicious beginning to the Frank Lampard era at Stamford Bridge.

This is the sort of emotion you see from a side that hasn't played in the Premier League in 12 years:

Also probably not a good sign that the floodgates opened after Pulisic entered for the final third of the match.

Pep will manage City for the Vinny Testimonial on September 11, and Roberto Martinez will manage the Premier League All-Star XI, which will be headlined by Rafael Van der Vaart.

Vinny, btw, is winless (2D, 1 L) in his first 3 matches as player/manager with Anderlecht.

Everton defeats Watford 1:0 in the Goodison opener for the Toffees. Bernard scored in the 10th minute and Everton held on as Watford had chances for a couple of equalizers against a home side that played a bit nervous at times.

Toffees return to action on Friday at Aston Villa.

And with this being the first home win of this season, this song echoed throughout Goodison:

Down yonder in League One, Bury have been expelled from the English Football League entirely this week for entering insolvency, with the team having not played a single match this season. This, in addition to Bolton, who was deducted 12 points for entering Administration. Bury were newly promoted to League One, having finished 2nd in League Two last season.

Bury is said to be considering legal action against the EFL. They are the first club to face expulsion since Maidstone United in 1992. (An interesting side note is that TV pundit Warren Barton was a player for Maidstone United at that time.)

They are a club with a rich tradition, especially from the early first half of the 20th Century, winning 2 FA Cups, but last played in the top flight in 1928-29. Brian Clough's career ending injury as a Sunderland player was suffered against Bury.

They will be able to re-apply for League eligibility in 2020/21, but would have to play their way in from a non-league situation to start.

Only 3 teams now face relegation to League Two this season.

Vinny testimonial finishes 2:2, although perhaps fittingly, he was unable to play due to injury. The club also announced it is commissioning a statue, and has renamed the road leading to their youth and community fields after the former club captain.

After a rough start to the Anderlecht (2 draws and 3 losses), he was relieved of co-managing responsibilities and is now back to player-only status.

Everton lose 3:1 today at Bournemouth. Everton's defensive effort in this one was absolutely dreadful, particularly in the 2nd half. Lone goal for the Toffees was scored by Dominic Calvert-Lewin late in the first half. Everton away form continues to be lacking and they still have never won a Premier League match at Vitality Stadium.

Everton return to action Saturday at home vs. Sheffield United.

Everton loses at home today 0:2 to Sheffield United. Rather disappointing result for the Toffees and poor form from the squad the past couple of weeks. Doesn't exactly auger well for their chances next week when they host Manchester City.

Everton lost at Burnley 1:0. Lone goal was scored in the 72nd minute with the Toffees down a man. 4th straight defeat for Everton and it wouldn't surprise me if Marco Silva was sacked during the upcoming international break.

Everton returns to action vs. West Ham United on October 19th.

City continue to be lost on defense without Vinny's leadership. Nice win for the Wolves. Weird struggling in league and being good in the CL group stage

Also, Watford is surprisingly struggling.

Liverpool unblemished through 8 matches, with a late victory Saturday vs. Leicester in a dramatic match. They already have a win @ Chelsea and a win vs. Arsenal, and sit 8 points out front vs. Man City, and 9 vs. Arsenal.

EFL (League) Cup R16 draw (to be played Oct.29-30):

(3) Burton Albion vs. Leicester City
(4) Crawley Town vs. (4) Colchester United (who stunned Spurs 4:3 on pks)
Everton vs. Watford
Manchester City vs. Southampton
(3) Oxford United vs. (3) Sunderland
Liverpool vs. Arsenal
Aston Villa vs. Wolverhampton
Chelsea vs. Manchester United

There will be at least one team each from League One and League Two in the quarterfinals as both divisions had pairs of teams drawn together.

There are no teams remaining from the Championship, as 6 of the 7 teams in the R32 eliminated by Premier League teams, with Stoke City being eliminated by League Two side Crawley Town 5:3 on pks.

Everton finally breaks their 4 match Premier League losing streak today, defeating West Ham United 2:0. Goals by Bernard and Sigurdsson, who incidentally did not start and came on late in the match, scoring his goal in stoppage time in the 2nd half. It's the first Premier League win for the Toffees since September 1st and their first clean sheet since August 18th and it likely saves Marco Silva's job for another week.

Everton returns to action next Saturday at Brighton & Hove Albion.
