I don't question Joe very often but this makes no sense. If you are going to bring Montgomery in now, why not just start him?

Maddon makes no sense at all with this lineup. You are correct, why not just start Montgomery. He is playing as if this is a spring training game. No sane manager would start a rookie battery at this stage of the season. He loves to play the hot hand, but where are they, meaning Zobrist and Almora. On the friggin bench.

Sure he didn't want to use him but since Montgomery was just starting, he could easily give the Cubs 3-4 innings without burning other relievers.

My problem with it is they are going to need him this weekend because all the other Cubs lefties can't get anyone out. I loved the move to put him in the bullpen, but I hate it if he is going to burn him out as a long reliever tonight. The Cubs bats might bale Joe out, since as I type this are killing the Mets pitchers. Might get a chance to cut the innings down for Montgomery.

Baez needs to join Schwarber in adjusting his swing like Rizzo with two strikes. Especially with a runner on third and only one out.

Pitching matchups for this weekend's HUGE series at Wrigley:

Friday: Martinez (11-10, 3.33) vs. Lackey (11-11, 4.65)
Saturday: Wacha (12-7, 3.99) vs. Hendricks (6-5, 3.35)
Sunday: Lynn (11-7, 3.01) vs. Quintana (10-11, 4.25)

Thoughts?

With 3 K's tonight, Ian Happ is inching ever closer to Kyle Schwarber's strikeouts versus at bat percentage. One K for every three AB, is pretty high for a switch hitter.

The way Almora is playing just cements my opinion that he should be starting in CF every game. Schwarber, Almora, Heyward across the outfield. Bryant, Russell(when back) or Baez, Baez(if Russell comes back) or Happ/Zobrist, Rizzo across the infield. Contreras behind the plate. That is the lineup I would like to see down the stretch.

Good to see Heyward hit one out. Hopefully that'll help him with confidence. Good for Almora too. Yes Happ is really in one of those struggling patches he gets into. I think Almora will get a couple starts in center this weekend, be interesting to see if it's today. I think Joe would want him in there with Lackey being such a fly ball guy, but I also think Joe won't like his match-up with Martinez. I'm sure he likes his match-up with Wacha and Lynn better, they're less overpowering.

To be fair:

1) Joe realizes the pressure is still on everyone else in the division. He can still afford to take chances.
2) Joe needs to figure out a bullpen for the postseason. I think you're going to see a lot more unconventional stuff short-term in relief. Buckle up.

Just a reminder today's start time is 1:20 CDT.

Also, the Pirates are eliminated from the division race if they lose today.

Bryant goes deep to tie it up at one.

McCarver was all over that play. Said in the first inning if Jon Jay dumps a ball in front of you in LF you are playing too deep.

He does that in the 4th. Fortunately for the Cardinals Pham threw out Rizzo at home.

Lackey continues to show his classy behavior.

If you can't get a pitcher out it's on you. Sorry.

So wheres the accountability for the umpire missing a belt high, right down the middle pitch?! Instead of 1-1 bottom 5 its 2-1 bottom 5.

This is the EXACT reason people are clamoring for robot umps to call balls and strikes. Yeah, some pitches may not be called strikes around the edges, but there wouldnt be any egregious blown calls like that one.

How many missed balls/strikes do you think an ump misses per game?

It was an awful call. Lackey is a 38 year old veteran and he didn't handle the moment well enough. When you make it a habit of *** all the time you may not get the benefit of the doubt.

Pretty sure the umpire knows he missed it. That's why he didn't toss him before the next batter

Now if the Cubs lose by 1 maybe the ump should be tossed and fined

Cardinals aren't good enough. Even though they had the momentum they couldn't hold the lead :).
