The Hillsborough Disaster occurred, a crush of people that occurred at the FA Cup Semifinal match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, held at Sheffield's Hillsborough Stadium. 96 people lost their lives, and nearly 800 more were injured. The match was suspended and contested on May 7.

The human and political drama that followed involved police coverups and attempts to blame the victims themselves, England being banned from European competitions (further motivated by an earlier 1986 event in Belgium), and standing areas being eliminated from English soccer, which remained in effect until just the past few years.

It has been the subject of repeated criminal and governmental probes to determine the truth, and it wasn't until 2012 that the victims were publicly cleared of wrongdoing by legal authorities.

It was just determined 2 years ago that the deceased were the victims of a crime, and those criminal trials for authorities responsible remain ongoing.

Here is the live television broadcast from the day. You'll note security officials start to stir around the stadiums perimeter after about 3 minutes, running before 4 minutes, and fans spilling over the stadium walls about 4 minutes in.

A good documentary from 2012:
