NASCAR 2020

Post by deejay »

I see that Caterpillar sponsor has a new driver, Tyler Reddick up from the lower circuit. Perhaps exciting enough watch at least Daytona 500!

The Daytona 500 has been postponed until 4PM (ET) tomorrow.

A lengthy rain delay before starting it, but spotty showers kept hitting multiple times after they had gotten the track dry and were ready to re-start.

Probably for the best as there was still a pretty strong chance of rain til about 9 or 10 PM ET tonight. Race will still be on FOX tomorrow afternoon. Only about 20 laps were completed before the race started.

Horrible crash near finish line at Daytona. Ryan Newman, former Cat driver flipped upside down. Prayers for him tonight, it did not look good.

I have never seen a car get hit upside down on the driver side like that before. It makes my stomach turn to see that crash.

Saw a report he was awake when they got him out of the car but no more info has gotten out.

Thank goodness for that. Next hope is that he isn’t paralyzed

Part of this has already been mentioned before but here is the latest statement from Roush Fenway Racing:

I realize there is a long way to go on this story and Newman's recovery (whatever that might look like), but when it happened, I did not think this was in the cards. Thank God I was wrong!

Yep, obviously beyond the replay, the follow-up actions by the paramedics and safety crew using tarps and blinds and the use of CPR really put things into perspective.

I had not heard the use of CPR. If u can imagine he was literally inches away from winning the race.

Probably the closest I can compare it to would be Davey Allison's flip at Pocono where he was pancaked as the car bounced onto the metal guard rail. He somehow was able to race the following week, with blood-black eyes. . .he also survived a near-fatal crash in Charlotte, shortly before that wreck.

And then he would die the following year when the helicopter he was leaving Talladega in, crashed.

What scared me last night watching the race and seeing it happen in real time was the feeling I had when he gets hit driver side was the same I had when I saw Dan Wheldon fly into the fence in Vegas. Both times I said it out loud. I was wrong last night, a testament to the safety of these cars and some providence.

PS- I read on Twitter a few people talking about CPR, but when they were pressed they couldn't provide anything more definitive than "well I heard it or I could see it through the blinds." One guy claimed there was a video, but again when pressed it produced nothing more than grainy stills that showed nothing. I might be true, but I haven't seen or heard anything that I would say confirms it.

So there was NASCAR racing on FS1 from Homestead-Miami yesterday, just of a different sort. 36 drivers competed in an iRacing event:

Was definitely a nice distraction to have yesterday with everything else going on in the world.
