I read something on Twitter saying the Cubs were pursuing James Shields.

I agree with all of this but I do not think they will change their mind on Bryant and he will still be up until around May 1st. No way they want to lose a year of control on him. I think the next move will be an outfielder.
Luis Valbuena will be the starting 3B on opening day, with Chris Coghlan in LF. When Bryant comes up, he'll slide into one of those 2 positions. At this point, I don't think it matters which. If you put him in LF, then you could consider moving Baez to 3B, and then Castro to 2B next year when Russell is ready.

Wouldn't shock me. I recall hearing that the Cubs said they had $45 million to spend this year in free agency.

Honest question for you Cubs fans on here...what do you think the win total for the team will be this upcoming season?

As the team is right now I think around 83 is about right.

Bryant should only have to be in AAA for aboit 9 days to avoid Super 2 status. So he should still play 140-150 games for the Cubs.

If that's the case, they should have no problem getting him 500 at bats.

I think the ceiling could be 85-87. But 83 sounds right.

Do they look for outfield bat.....????
Their rotation is set 1-4, and there are serviceable guys who will compete for the #5 spot (Wada, Wood, Doubet).

As far as veteran OF bat guys go, I'd look for a Johnny Gomes type guy. I don't think they'll spend significant money because I still believe that Bryant is going to be the leftfielder with Soler in right.
I think that they will go after Gomes as well. If they sign Ross, I see a decent trade in the making as I believe that other teams value Castillio more than the Cubs.

A couple reports I have seen tonight.

Theo said no way at another 100 mil pitcher now. Sounds like most of the big stuff they have been linked to on twitter since Lester is a no.

The Cubs would like to sign Jonny Gomes, who has a history with Joe Maddon in Tampa Bay.

The Gomes report has been out there a couple times and most figured the next 100 mil pitcher would be picked up next off season.

I fully expect Castillo to be traded.

Assuming the Cubs' players are relatively healthy, Cub fans should reasonably expect 83 wins or a 10 win improvement over last season. They have upgraded their manager, their pitching staff, and their positional players should improve based on a year of growth and Bryant being up for most of the season. Anything less than this and fans should be very disappointed.

So we are all agreed then, no projections on how any team will do in a particular season until after said season is over right?

As for Castillo, he might be traded for a middle reliever, but I'd like to see the lefty/righty thing with Miguel. Catchers wear down pretty fast at Wrigley!

I think Lester's personal catcher, David Ross, will be signed.

It is starting to look like the only team left to bid on Scherzer could be the Yankees.

It appears the chances of the Tigers re-signing starting pitcher Max Scherzer are dwindling, as general manager Dave Dombrowski revealed Thursday at the Winter Meetings the right-handed hurler is not on the team's radar at the current time.

I don't post a lot but I thought this was pretty funny from the Cubs signing Lester.

The Cubs have agreed to sign reliever Jason Motte, according to ESPN.

It looks like a 1 year flyer.

I'm waiting to hear the first meatball fan start talking about disrespecting Kerry Wood by giving away his number. LOL
